    Star Network drops subscription charges
11:45 GMT, Tuesday 20th January 2004 -- by Neil Wilkes
Asian channels Star News and Star Plus will drop their subscription charges from March 1, it was announced today.

Following a deal between the Star Network and Sky, the channels - up until now only available for a £12/mo additional fee - will be available to all viewers with the Family or Lifestyle packs.

“This is fantastic news for our existing UK satellite Asian viewers, offering huge savings and more choice for the entire family across all ages, through the Sky Family Pack," said Suruchi Sthalekar, head of Star marketing in the UK.

"It meets the demands of today’s South Asian audiences, where families want to keep in touch and maintain a strong cultural bond with their roots.”

Interesting. The mix of languages on Indian channels possibly makes these worth casting an occasional eye over. Last year one of the channels in that part of the EPG - possibly Star Plus, I can't remember - broadcast the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionare unencrypted, and while much of the chat between questions was in a local language (Hindi?), the questions themselves were in English, making the whole thing possible to follow. If the news channel has a similar linguistic mix, it might be an interesting alternative to Sky, Fox, News24, etc.

At last they have realised that a lot of Asians in the UK don't like paying monthly for something that the rest of the community get for free, ie Basic TV.

what do these channels show? my memories of Star News was a rebroadcast of FOX News, but the picture quality of it was exceptional. FOX News should take note

being of indian origin and able to speak the language this is welcome news.

all the majority of indian tv companies charge 12 euro/14 euro a month. so most asian families are only able to afford one package. There are three major hindi ones

    Zee TV Network
    B4U/Sony TV
    Star Networks
