Lindows, good or bad?

Anyone used Lindows?, whatcha make of it?, I know its stable, but does it have issues with older hardware? (I'm thinking ISA graphics card on a old mobo with a P3 700) ... when things go wrong is it easy or hard to diagnose it? (by someone with little or no troubleshooting experience with Linux).
I'm thinking of possibly getting it for my parents, for web and email access only. They have no previous computer experience, so whatever GUI I present will be a first they will have worked with.
Its either this or Fedora, which is free and works just fine (autoupdates are a big plus) .... but I'd like to explore the other possibilities.....

Try Mandrake 9.2, very easy to work with...

    Thanks joePC

Its dead easy install Lindows but I installed it on a P400 and found it VERY slow, it wasn't really a fair tests as the machine only had 64MB Ram.

But the installation of Lindows was so easy, it basically ment clicking next twice and agreeing to a license agreement, thats basicallt it :D
Think I'll stick to other *nix's though...

If they have broadband and the ADSL router acts as a DHCP server with NAT then you could use a knoppix boot CD - about the only setting you have to change is the keyboard layout

Nahh ... dial up only I'm afraid .... I'll have to play with Fedora another bit, I'm starting to think that Lindows may be a pain in the ass (min spec for Ver 4.5 is a P3 800!!) ... I might install it first just to check it out, put on Fedora afterwards .... hows the dial-up-networking in Fedora? .. I have a old dell at work with Fedora on it but its on the LAN, never tried using a modem with any flavour of unix...:o

Not to sure about Fedora, but I've found setting up and connecting with a good-old hardware modem in SuSE 8.0 easier then in Windows, bloody weird stuff altogether.

As for networks a nvidia NIC gets annoying, drivers wise :dunno:

Lindows, default user is root. I would not recommend anyone that Linux in anyform to run as root, but maybe if you come from a windoze background you might be ok with it.

I'm a Lindows Insider (beta tester) for the last few years, and it's the best Linux distribution I've ever used. Hardware detection and installation is simple and almost perfect. I use the OS full-time (alongside WinXP for gaming), and it's perfect for everyday stuff. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting a change from Windows operating systems. I would recommend a broadband connection though. Their Click-N-Run warehouse requires downloading every piece of software you want installed from it. It still comes with the basics pre-installed such as web browser, IM, CD burner, MP3 player, office suite, etc.

I think Lindows is a great thing for the Linux world, as you won't see Linux become mass-market until companies like this go commercial with it. I'm looking forward to Lindows 5.0 which is coming out this year. It supposedly will have a massive revamp to the GUI (made by new full-time employee Everaldo) and will include KDE 3.2 and the 2.6 kernel (if KDE's out in time).

Not really, all thats required is Kernel Sources and the driver, just configure and make really, the readme and stuff is all avail at nvidia.com or the nforcehq.com sites

Yep, that's Everaldo of Crystal fonts and icons fame! Apparently he was about to sign up for a company outside the Linux world, and Lindows spotted the opportunity to keep him working for Linux. They signed him up as a full-time employee. I don't know if this means that he will no longer produce any more free Linux themes, only time will tell.

Either way it will be very interesting to see what he comes up with, if its anything like his past work I may buy it to stick on a heavily restricted partition my my laptop, and leave it around for some diehard windows users to weep over :)
