Is it better to learn photo retouching with photoshop from books or through training courses?
I am keen to learn the the techniques employed by the advertising/publishing industries when retouching photographs for magazine covers/advertisements etc.

Can anyone recommend either a suitable book or distance learning course I could use to familiarise myself with these skills?

Pick up a copy of Digital Photo in Easons (haven't seen it anywhere else). It includes mpeg video tutorials for photoshop. I subscribed for a year, and learned a lot from it. It gets repetitive after about 7 or 8 months though. I have a few photoshop books too, but they are more useful for reference than for tutorials.

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers

I second this it's the perfect book for someone just looking to use photoshop for dealing with photos. Excellent book.

anyone recommend any good websites with intermediate tutorials on photoshop, ive only been using it for about a month now, was using psp8 before that, ive got the basics pretty much pinned down at this stage, just want to make some really cool looking texts and such, oh and if anyone knows where i can get tutorials on using PS in conjunction with video editing software such as video vegas for making really great looking intros, like for example i was doing a tutorial on adding flames to the outside of text and i was wondering if it could be used for animated fire around text for intros
