TV3 are starting American Idol 3 next Saturday @ 6pm, with a bumper 2-hour show featuring the first stage auditions from across the US, so look forward to lots of crap singers being told they're terrible by Simon Cowell & co. They take it so much more seriously than the UK auditionees, it's fun to watch them get reamed :D

isnt FX suppose to be showing it too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Hey Zhane, FX were rumoured to be showing it and I was well excited bout that cos I wasn't sure if TV3 were getting it again after season 2.

Unfortunately ITV2 got the rights to satellite/UK airing, so it's not gonna be on FX at all. For anyone that has ITV2, Idol 3 is starting on Friday, a day before TV3..

In saying all that, TV3 prob got the show through their whole Granada thing when ITV2 got the rights, so it's much of a muchness I s'pose, I would've watched on FX or TV3, whichever had gotten it.

Did ya watch American Idol 2 on TV3 Zhane? I don't know anyone else that watched it, despite all the ppl I mentioned it to :D

As with all these "talent" shows (and I use the term loosely), the auditions are always the best shows.... You're guaranteed a good laugh. They should send over that terrible dublin guy with the mullet who keeps showing up on Irish talent searches.... see how he'd fare over there.

Yeah, you'd think after being told to fcuk off by Simon Cowell on Pop Idol he'd give it a rest, but there he was at the You're A Star auditions again. What's worse is that RTE keep showing clips of him...that's only bloody encouraging the tosser!

Just a reminder that season 3 is on tomorrow @ 6pm

It started last Monday on Fox in US. Ratings are very good so far, they improved over the 3 days.

My only worry is that TV3 were pretty liberal with the editing(read hacking to pieces) of the episodes. Tomorrow's start on TV3 is only 2 hours, though there's 3 hours worth of show from during the week. I know the generous amount of ad breaks push the running time up a lot, but TV3 will still need to hack away if they wanna cut a full hour out. I'd rather seen ALL the bad singers

    :p

I would rather see some talented musicians performing original songs on the tv rather than this banal crap. Yes the self-deluded wannabies are amusing, for about five minutes after that I just find it very depressing.

Just gave it a quick look, pretty funny

Bit off topic but did anyone see the UK auditions.

There was this fella who was really .......well...... simple i suppose you could say. he sang in his local pub or something and they put him up to it. He was terrible and simon said something along the lines of "your crap and youll never ever make it as a singer".
The look on the fellas face was BRILLIANT, ya could see his heart breaking (im a heartless bastard, and if your one too you would have found it damn funny). Pete waterman was in hysterics laughing at him.

Poor fella i feel sorry for him but sweet jesus the face on him when he was told was brilliant.

Last night's episode was funny. A lot of hard-necked Texans who can't sing for **** who think they're the next big thing and start arguing when they're told otherwise.

    Saturday's auditions were great.

Wise to not waste too much time on the 'better' singers cos most of 'em won't make it past the cut in Hollywood, but DAMN, there are some terrible singers in America :p

That final girl Mallory with the lisp was hilarious! As was that scary Sarah girl who kept insisting on 'singing' Celine Dion's 'That's The Way It Goes' over & over even though she was so so bad :D

I laughed at that bit with the guy singing 'Do you love me, now that I can dance'....the big pause & then he comes out with 'watch me now' & everyone burst out laughing, it was very funny

Another 2 hours of audions next Saturday, wuhoo!

ps-- TV3 cut out a sizeable parade of losers from Houston @ the end, boo to them!

I think it's hallerious.... So many idiotic Americans with no tallent at all, only surviving on the false compliments that other people give them. They think they are going to become famous, but cannot even tell how bad their voices are... Simon is simply tough to pelase and brutally honest in his opinions - they just aren't used to people like him in the states, their reactions are very amusing... I think taht every time someone sings badly, they should haev someone backstage ready to run on and sing the same song 'properly' so that can get an idea of how bad they really are... That would be funny just for the look on their faces!

It was good, better than the english version. It's funny to see people who are really relly terrible telling Simon Cowell he would be sorry when they became a star. The guy who threw the water on Cowell was funny too. The chinese guy was the worst i've ever seen, even worse than Brendan Kilkenny

Tonights [Jan 31st] episode was good. Paula was out for most of it. So the two lads went to town on the entrants. Many many tears. Just the way I like it.

Just got to see Saturday (Jan 31st) show tonight, with the LA, San Francisco & Hawaii auditions.
It was even funnier than the week before! Lots of totally useless people :D

I quite enjoyed the little girl though, it was nice to have here inbetween some of the truly awful people. Even if she doesn't go any further in the competition I'm glad she got through.

Good news with TV3's scheduling of the show. According to the RTE Guide...
This Saturday, February 7th, we'll have the Hollywood round where they get the 117 people who got golden tickets in the first round, down to the 32 who'll compete for the final 10 (or 12 depending on wild cards etc). That's Saturday February 7th @ 6pm.
Then the first group of 8 to compete for national votes PLUS the results show will be shown Thursday February 12th @ 8pm.
This is much better than TV3's schedule last year with the performances on Saturday, and results on Sunday.
It means the time difference between the voting being announced on Fox in the US and on TV3 is much shorter (only a day this year versus four days last season), so less chance of spoilers...E! News was very dangerous last year, most of the time I'd have seen who got voted off in the New Flash before I had a chance to turn it off

    February 7th (saturday) @ 6pm-7:45pm HOLLYWOOD
    Febuary 12th (thursday) @ 8pm-9:30pm 1st SEMI-FINAL GROUP + RESULTS

I'm glad to see there's actually some people out there watching the show, it's waaaaay funnier than the UK one!! :p

Tonights one was good. Had been waiting to see how the crooner (John Stevens) would get on. I thought his song was good and was delighted to see him top the vote. There's too many jolly pop singers in it, time for a crooner to sweep the board.

By the way, the fact that I'm watching the show is in no way related to the fact that I've lost my job. :)

Glad to see someone's still watching it :D

I like John, he has a certain charm, and he does at least sound different.

Wild Card show next week should be interesting. Some returning faces I'm happy to see again, some not so much. Can't believe Jon Peter Lewis aka Pen Guy is back, as well as Marque Lynche & worst of all, Leah LaBelle, the snotty Bulgarian "my parents were pop stars in Bulgaria so I'm entitled". She's terrible. Hope she doesn't improve lots & sing really well next week now hehe. Tiara Purifoy(what were her parents thinking?!) has a bit of 'tude going on too, don't like her.

My 4 picks I'd put through based on their earlier performances would be:

    1) Katie Webber-- I like cheerleader girl :p
    2) Lisa Leuschner-- crime that Matt Rogers(Rose Bowl dude) got through over her.
    3) Eric Yoder-- about the only guy I've liked in the competition so far.
    4) Susie Vulaca-- she was good tonight, so wouldn't mind seeing more of her.

    Wild Card 12

Anyone any thoughts on the final 8 so far? I don't really dislike any of them so far except for Matt Rogers, don't think he deserved to get through at all. I'd still rather listen to him over Chris Doran any day though ;)

Figured as much, what with ITV2 showing it also, and how similar the schedules are getting 'tween TV3 and ITV!

"just to let ya know, TV3 do not edit the programmes when they come into the station they are edited in the UK B4 they are sent to ireland."

Remember, that part of the reason for this is because the US version had advertising and promtoional elements "The Red Coca-Cola room" and the "Ford something else" etc (not sure if they're titled as such this year, but they were in 2003) - these types of promotion and advertising aren't allowed under UK rules.

They probably aren't here either, but the Coca-Cola cups were blurred on ITV2 last year. Can't remember if they were on TV3.

However, I remember a West Wing (pre E4) which Sky One had to cut bits out of (including a "Promotional Consideration provided by Korean Airlines") which RTE One left in on its showing.

Also, look at the differences in the end credits of Neighbours, same thing.

Must check and see if the 24 "Promotional Consideration provided by Ford etc." is removed on Sky's UK airings...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

We actually get the Ford advertising segments this year on American Idol on TV3, wherever the editing is done.
The Coca-Cola spots are deleted, as are the occasional Clairol Herbal Essences spots.
The end credits are left the same though, always with the "Promotional Considerations paid by..."
It's a long enough list on Idol: Gap, Old Navy, Nokia, Coca-Cola, Ford, Clairol to name a few....
The blurring out of the Coca-Cola plastic cups the judges drink from doesn't happen very often this season either. The cups were usually blurred last season.

With respect to the editing, I wasn't talking about the promotional spots though, as I could care less. I was talking about when they would edit out performances from past contestants on a singing talent show. In American Idol 2, when Kelly Clarkson, the season 1 winner was coming on to perform her debut single, they edited it out, despite the fact they left the intro with Ryan Seacrest mention that she was just about to perform, and then when he'd comment after her performance. To my knowledge they only left in one performance of hers + one of the first season runner-up Justin Guarini. So far this season the edits are kinder to past contestants, but Ruben, last year's winner was deleted from one of the semi-final stages. Not that I mind missing Ruben ;)
It's just that TV3 were advertising the show being an hour (or 30mins in the case of the results show), and then cut performances from past contestants, even when the show was running well short of it's alloted time, thanks to the deletion of promotional spots, voting number information and some ad breaks.
Last year, TV3 would start the show late and finish it early, shoving Popcorn in to fill in space. Now, why deleted a 3min performance when you've paid to show the series & it's clearly not running over time. If they were showing extra ads to bring in advertising revenue fine, but it was just Popcorn!!
That's all that bugged me! I dunno, call me crazy, I just like to see people singing on American Idol, even if they're crap

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Tonight's Gloria Estefan Idol was fairly crap overall, except for Diana singing 'Turn The Beat Around' @ the end.
Thank God John Stevens is finally gone! He butchered songs week after week, and the entertainment value of his crapness was long past!

Hope Diana goes all the way, she's been my favourite since the semi-finals.
Fantasia, last week she pimped her child for votes, this week she pimped Jennifer (who was voted off last week). God damn she has no shame. She was brutal tonight, and I think the judges are getting sick of her & George Huff after a few substandard weeks, wuhoo!

"Don't miss the all new special AMERICAN IDOL: THE FINAL FIVE '04 where we get intimate with the final 5 and hear them sing their favorite song from the season so far! Tuesday May 4 on TV3 @ 10pm"

For some reason, this was originally titled
AMERICAN IDOL: HALF WAY HOME in some TV listings which
didn't get an ammended title in time for Tuesday's airing...

Didn't get a chance to check ITV2 on the EPG before it was on, so not sure what they had.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

For some reason this was originally titled AMERICAN IDOL: HALF WAY HOME in some TV listings

They actually didn't correct the on-screen title either, 'Half way Home' came up on all the breaks, which was funny cos half of 12 is six, not five, but whatever ;)
John Stevens' parents were in the audience though, so I'm not sure if he was meant to be there or summat.
All their song choices were predictable, except for Diana whom I'm sure would pick one of the more recent songs that were actually well received by the judges, like 'One Voice' or 'Turn the Beat Around'.

Fantasia - 'Summertime' from Movie Night.
George - 'Take Me To The Pilot' from Elton John Night.
Jasmine - 'Inseperable' from Soul Night.
Diana - 'Think' from Soul Night.
La Toya - 'Somewhere' from Movie Night.

I don't think any of them surpassed their previous performances of the songs. Jasmine was noticeably weaker with hers, unable to hold the notes near as well as she did first time around. Same with LaToya, she didn't sound as good. Diana spent too much time getting the audience involved to get her vocals on track, but she was decent enough.
As for Fantasia and George, well I don't like them, so they were sucky as usual ;)

Hope Big Band doesn't mean deafeningly loud backing music to the point that we can't hear the singing as happened in previous weeks with a live band.

    Diana to win! :D

Well I have to say, I'm not surprised that LaToya went tonight, I predicted it last week. Lots of articles/sites online reckoned that voting would get split between Fantasia and LaToya. Personally I didn't like how they were being pimped so bad, so early in the competition. Like they were 'entitled' to the Final Two, rather than earning it over the weeks.
LaToya was seriously boring most weeks. Entirely competent, but damn boring. I didn't ever think she had a good shot at winning the competition, but she was entertaining most weeks. Disco Night, I felt she had really come to the end, even before the result. She hadn't brought anything new to the songs, and got less votes accordingly.
I've not been a fan of Fantasia's for the reason stated above. She's rarely impressed me at all over the competition as her voice just grates on me big time. HATED her two songs for Disco, and last week for Big Band. In saying that I was surprised her votes slumped so much, even if I was glad to see her smug, superior self in the Bottom Two.
Jasmine was definitely the weakest performer of the night. I don't think she's ever recovered vocally since the week she had the flu. Her voice is sounding more and more strained every week, with a very noticeable rasp to it. She was all over the place with her songs for Disco, but it was clear that she was gonna get some pity votes (like John Stevens) when she started crying after the judges were less than complimentary.

I was SO happy to see Diana finally get some serious credit for her improvement, she's been my favourite since the start. I think Simon's backpedal on Diana was mostly because he sensed that she had a strong shot at getting into the Final, so he complimented her so he wouldn't look like an idiot if she won. (This happened in season 1 when Kelly Clarkson made it to the Final, and won, against Cowell's predictions.)

Ultimately I think Diana 100% deserved to be safe this week. It bugs me that people will take away from her accomplishment based on their unhappiness with the results. Last season, my favourite contestant went mid-way through, and I was mad for a little while, but hey, it's only a TV show, and Americans will vote for sympathy as much as for talent.
Jasmine at least deserved to be in the Bottom Two, but the pity votes saved her. As for Fantasia and LaToya, I think their pimping, and the tongue baths they got from the judges nearly every week worked against them. Notice how Simon (and the others) were noticeably less-complimentary of them this week, most likely again that Simon sensed that they both wouldn't make it through, and he wanted to save face by ACTUALLY critiquing them. I really think Simon was very overboard with the praise for both of them in the past, like they could do no wrong. Clearly they were as vunerable as any contestant. For the race element, I was never expecting a Final Two of LaToya and Fantasia, mostly because I didn't believe Americans would vote for two black women, even with Idol's large black viewership. Jasmine should've gone home this week, but then John Stevens should've left a lot sooner than he did. Honestly I think race played *some* part in it, but with regards Diana, she got her votes because she deserved them, and I'm still rooting for her to win, regardless who is standing beside her next week (and hopefully in the Final Two).

Go Diana, win win win! :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 73 ✭✭monkeymagic

Watching it tonight all I could of think of was how much it reminded me of a cruise ship cabaret show. No wonder Simon is always so grouchy on it, he doesn't have to sit through that on the British version.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Have to disagree, Pop Idol 2 was chockful of mediocre singers including Brian Ormonde who someone keeps insisting is a star, yet he never wins anything.

Oh and Ruben could definitely beat Michelle in a weigh-in so it's clear, American Idol is more fun to watch, and has better singers :)

    Go Diana Go!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

First of all, TV3 suck big time for holding the Idol Final until Saturday instead of showing it on Thursday. The winner will be all over the internet by Wednesday night, so being able to avoid spoilers is unlikely

So from the lack of postage on this thread, I'm not sure many people care about who wins, but does *anyone* feel strongly about Diana or Fantasia?

Personally I think Diana is much stronger, and has grown the most over the competition, whereas Fantasia came into it being pimped to high Heaven, and hasn't actually produced any new qualities in the past 12 weeks.
I hate that last week Simon (and the other judges) fell over themselves praising Fantasia, no matter how her vocals sounded. I mean her rendition of 'The Greatest Love of All' was her at her most screechy, yet she was "flawless" etc according the judges.
Since LaToya went, it was clear that Simon didn't want to give any great compliments to Diana incase she actually overtook Fantasia in popularity in the final run. His nicest comment was about her song choice, and nothing about her actual ability. Of course, the following day, AFTER voting was well over, he said on TV that "Diana nailed that last song". Try saying that on air you biased fúck.

I mean, *IF* Fantasia is indeed the Best Singer/Performer that Simon keeps saying she is, surely she should win on her talent alone, rather than because of excessive and one-sided pimping by him.
For the final, the show always does live feeds from the contestants' home towns. For Fantasia, they have Clay Aiken hosting her rally in North Carolina. Clay came 2nd last year, and is actually more popular than Ruben (last year's winner). For Diana, they have Kimberely Caldwell as host, who placed 6th last season, and is nowhere near as popular or prominent as Clay. Clearly lots of people will turn up in North Carolina to see Clay rather than support Fantasia, yet the distortion of a larger crowd will impact voting, so it's hardly fair.
Plus the fact that Simon will either:
    a) Reluctantly compliment Diana during the final just incase she wins, despite his best efforts to the contrary, OR more likely
    b) Come down on Diana much harder because he knows any criticism will lose her some votes. Meanwhile he'll praise Fantasia no end, no matter how good/bad her vocals are.

I'll be interested to see how things go since they're both singing the same song. If it's a big ballad made for belting á la 'A Moment Like This' from season 1, then Diana clearly has the edge, but will it be reflected in Simon's comments? Of course not.

While this is all very long-winded(it's a rant, what do ya expect?!), I do realise that Simon has his favourite, and will do whatever it takes to get her the win, it just bugs me that ALL the coverage is geared towards Fantasia, right down to FOX newscasters pimping her on air over Diana
There should at least be some semblance of balanced coverage, whatever about Simon Cowell's preference.
Hopefully the trend of voting off his darling contestants will continue and Fantasia will lose because people are sick of Simon being so biased. Now that would be great, but inevitably, it would then make it seem that Diana won just because she was the only other choice to Fantasia, rather than because she deserved it, which she most certainly does. Fantasia has had a piss easy ride throughout the show in terms of criticism, and her voice is just So. Damn. Grating!
Diana has been unpopular with the judges, but has incorporated their critiques into her performances and has only come back stronger each week. In sum, Diana for American Idol 2004.

Go Diana! Hope ya kick Fantasia's ass with a big belting ballad, and leave Simon speechless :D
