......George W. Bush will rebuff claims that fruit and vegetables are good for you...kinda

    http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040116/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/us_obesity

basically it says that the WHO have advised people to cut back on fats and salts, and eat more fruit and veg. Bush thinks that this is not a good idea for people with weight problems...
Is he going to tell us there is no obesity problem in the US next?

It has more to do with the faulty science used in the report and the belief that government should solve all society's problems. A balanced diet with proper exercise is the only way and surest way to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. This has been missed by the so-called experts. Cutting back specific foods such as fat and sugar does not solve the obesity problem. High carbohydrate food have more long term effects without proper exercise than any other food source.

First, everything you eat is turned into glucose (sugar) and those that are not used are stored as fat in your body. The problem with obese individuals is a lack of exercise and a lack of a proper diet. Most obese people overcompensate on fat or sugar while maintaining a normal protein or carb intake and either having little or normal exercise that cannot compensate the calorie intake. Having just a carb and protein intake does not give the body its full range of required nutrients in order to maintain proper balance. In studies, overcompensating on carbs has had far more devestating effects (such as cancer, diabetes, heart, and bone diseases) than sugar and fat. Fad diets, which mainly eliminate one particular group of food or another have had very little success and will make people lose weight in a short time but will eventually gain it back due to the nutrition imbalance that the body caves for. In essence, the WHO report is inherently flawed and needs to be revised. Furthermore, it is inherent of a sovereign nation to determine what is proper for its people not an outside agency to dictate its demands. It can publich the report but nations can either use it or ignore it without any undue sanctions from the WHO.
