    Hi all

Going to head to OZ later this year (December) and was wondering if anyone knows the best value flights to get there. Checked BA's site and from London they are quoting £1700 which is insane! Can’t seem to find OZ listed on the Aer Lingus site?!?

Anyone out there found a good value flight and actually have first hand experience of flying there?

Could be a useful thread to have on record for anyone else going.

Any help, as always, greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

Ring a good travel agent (Club Travel / Trailfinders) and ask them the same questions.

December is an expensive time but away from christmas you shouldn't have to pay £1700.

I flew with Qantas/BA, it was fine, stopped in Bangkok which was interesting. What else do you wanna know?

Also bear in mind you will be sitting in a plane for 20 hours approx so its worth paying another 50 or 100 euro for a nice airline such as BA or singapore airlines.

    05 Dec 2003 Dub-Sydney €1400 (AerLingus/BA/Qantas) via HongKong

After first week in Dec prices rocket by quite s few hundred €'s.

AerLingus and Qantas suck and BA is good. (But they co-share so no choice.)

I've done this route many, many times, and from experience would recommend:

    1. Cathay Pacific (via HongKong although SARS now a risk)
    2. Thai Airways (via Bangkok) or
    3. JAL (via Tokyo)

Singapore, Malaysian, Emirates and AirNZ are alternatives also

Trailfinders good at finding cheap routings, if you are flexible with your dates.

    And for Gods sake remember:
No Flora, Fauna (including all foodstuffs) or foreign Rugby jerseys are allowed into Australia now.

Good to see your off on the trip of a life time u'll love it Downunder . One of the sites you might take a look at is
www.gohop.ie They do very good deals on flights with different airlines .

A little tip for you try a few different dates in and around the date u want to go . Not just with gohop but with any airline. You might be surprised how much of a difference in price a week either side might make. And every Euro saved is another to spend later .

U might drop by my web site www.irishdownunder.net for a few more hints and tips .

All the best mate and have a ball

tell me about it. i have family over there and my sister flew over for a month over xmas. (with husband and 2 teenage kids). the stopover was in kuala lumpur for 12 hours, and they got some food, and some fruit which they didn't eat all of, and kept some oranges and a pear for the flight rather than throw them out. most of it got eaten on the plane, and when they came round with the disclaimer thing you have to sign to say you won't bring anything into Oz, my sister remembered the kids still had some left, and got them to eat it/thow away what was left.

she missed an orange and a pear in her own bag though, and got stopped at customs, and they spotted it on the x-ray and ended up keeping them back for 2 hours for questioning, and to take photo's (? wtf) the fruit!

    and wait for it.

she was in court on monday!

i don't now the verdict yet, but it's completely nuts.

inicdentally, what's the chances of them finding out about past convictions (8 years ago, so spent conviction) when applying for a working visa or residency?

where was conviction? If in Australia they WILL know about it. If in Ireland then they wouldn't have access to that unless you are an International villian?????

Seems harsh over a bit of fruit, but customs take that sort of thing very seriously at home. Basically (and I'm sure you realise this), they are just trying to protect the country from a range of pests that currently do not exist in Australia and could have a detrimental effect of agriculture should they get in.

Anyway, I hope customs or the courts recognise that your sister wasn't intentionally bringing fruit in and they give her a slap on the wrist.

    Cheers

BTW, my wife (Irish) and I (Australian) have just completed the visa application process and you will need to provide the Australian High Commission in London with a Penal Clearance Certificate if you are applying for a Migration Visa. This will definitely include any criminal convictions.

Trailfinders in Dublin - my ticket via Frankfurt and Singapore cost E714 one-way.

(This aussie keyboard doesn't have a euro symbol !:)

I'm flying to NZ with these in April for €800. I'd be very surprised if you don't get a good priced flight to Aussie as well.

That price is for a return flight too btw.

Your heading there in the peak of their summer, which probably bunks the pice up a bit.

Any of the sites I've been looking at (with a sample date of 01/12-14/12) you are looking about €800-950
