€44 million railway signalling system well ahead of schedule

A €44.4 million re-signalling project covering 27 major railway stations and 450 kilometres of railway line is running up to six months ahead of schedule, according to Iarnrod Éireann.

Re-signalling of the Galway line has been completed six months ahead of schedule, while the Waterford line is due for completion by spring. At Carlow Railway Station, work has commenced on the Athy to Waterford line signalling system upgrade, and is due for completion in spring 2004, five months ahead of schedule.

Work has also begun on the Tralee and Sligo lines, with a project completion date of December 2005, according to Iarnrod Éireann.

The mini Centralised Traffic Control (CTC) project is spread across four major rail lines, including Ballinasloe to Galway, Athy to Waterford, Banteer to Tralee and Maynooth to Sligo. All trains on these lines will be detected, controlled and monitored from a bank of video display units at the CTC centre at Connolly Station.

Closed circuit television level crossings will be provided in station areas, and computerised solid state interlockings will provide safety of train operation.

When operational, the overall system control for the four lines and level crossings will be carried out from the Connolly CTC centre in the same way as the rest of the Iarnrod Éireann network.
