Luas trams have been vandalised during testing on the Tallaght line between the Luas depot and the Red Cow Interchange.

Two windows were broken in separate incidents as the vehicles were test driven in late October and again in late November.

A spokesperson for the Railway Procurement Agency said the windows was replaced following the incidents, and nobody was injured. He said the costs were not expected to run beyond €300.

Dublin Bus suffered a spate of similar attacks some years ago but this form of vandalism has now stopped in the Tallaght area, according to local gardai.

Separately, it was learned that three of 17 tram drivers recruited by Connex, the French operating company, have been let go. Fourteen drivers are now undergoing training.

Connex intends to employ a total of 100 tram drivers on the two Luas lines over the coming months,on the backof a recent advertising campaign in national newspapers.

The new tram lines from Sandyford in south Dublin to St Stephen's Green and from Tallaght in the west of the city to Connolly Station are due to come into operation in June and August this year.
