In a spot of bother at the moment, was told by a friend that my best bet for writing up a c.v. for a job i'm applying to would be to do it in .pdf format for various reasons. I'd like to get this done asap, but have spent most of the night fruitlessly searching for a free way to write up or convert files to said format. Everything i've found googling is free for windows or pay for mac, which kinda sux.

Anyone know where I might pick up some software that'll meet me needs?

Send the doc to me I'll do it for you. PM me if you like.

.doc (generally MS Office) is usually seen as an acceptable way for a CV to be sent ( .rft is generally more compatale though).
The main thing about .pdf is the fact that they are considered to be a "compatible" download for any decent internet browser.

Saying that .pdf would appear to be more "professional" as, unfortunately, some people looking at it would be thinking "how did he do that?", which is a sorry fact about the job front nowadays

Also a bit of a problem is that the only text editor I have to work with at the moment is, well, text editor...the mac's in built one. :(
So, can't send it as .doc. If nessecary I can probably just use someone else's pc to do it, but I'd rather have something on my laptop that I could use to do it again if at some point that becomes a nessecity.

I haven't looked, but I'm sure there's some doc -> pdf converter out there. Even for Mac, there'd probably be some freeware/adware to do it.
I'm using Adobe Acrobat (not just the reader) at the moment for PC.
Again, if you're stuck I'm sure there's some way to convert it.
There should even be a Mac text editor to MS text format out there too...if you're really stuck =/

Mac OSX lets you print to PDF! From MS Word though I think.

Mail me if you want me to do it and I should get it done by tomorrow.

Oh, and what stupid f*cking place needs you to have a cv by pdf, that is plain dumb.

It doesn't need it in .pdf. I'm going on a friends recommendation that it'll come across better if I send it in as .pdf. I want to email it and the cover letter in this format, as I trust the guys recommendation.

Edit: Hehe at Gordon down below. No probs :D

Son, a plain text file saved as PDF (portable document format) is going to look a bit amateurish.

If you want to send me the text of your CV as a private message I'll do it up in Word and save it as RTF (rich text format) for you, if you like.

I'm an editor by trade, so I can keep an eye on the language for you and so on; but this one's a freebie.

Hmm, the whole point of this is that I want to be able to do it on my own mac rather than having to rely on someone's else pc everytime tbh, which invalidates most ideas. I can write something up as .rtf myself if need be since text editor can do that.

Afaik the reason .pdf was suggested over any other format is not because of looks, but from a technical standpoint as it would be more secure than .doc et al. This would be a talking point (maybe) in an interview and show some technical knowledge. I don't know about this meself as I haven't looked into.

What was suggested (if i remember correctly, and I may not, i'm very tired been up more than 26hrs now) was that I do it up as a .doc file then make it into .pdf and then send said .pdf off as an email attachment.

Found a shareware program that would do you for a month anyways...

Do more searches for txt2pdf in Google and you might come across something freer. Who knows.

Hope it helps in some way.

I printed my CV to pdf from Word in office X. I think a pdf cv looks more professional (if it looks nice, not just a converted text file!).

Son, I just meant that a text-only CV might look a bit kludgy, because you mightn't be able to use various fonts and so on. But if you've managed that, well done.

And you're right about security (though it is possible to dismantle a PDF with Acrobat Pro).

www.openoffice.org can run on MAC's and is free and can save as PDF

There are on line services to convert stuff to PDF - no idea where you'd start looking though.

[edit]Part of the reason for buying Adobe PDF software is that you can put security into a document to prevent it being ripped apart. - But there is always OCR so no way foolproof.

Are you using Mac OS X?
You can print to pdf from all mac apps!
