The Next Step in Mobile Entertainment

Over the last few years mobiles have had a fair few gadgets added to them to make travel boredom disappear, and allow you to entertain yourself on your own without resorting to the 5 finger shuffle. The newest of these seems to be having tv channels on your mobile phone. Probably won't be over our way for another year or so at least, but still, watching discovery channel on the bus or car trip to work would be pretty cool, and they're one of the first channels to sign up for this service.

    Full article: http://www.mobiledia.com/forum/topic7621.html

Theres some very good news articles there regarding japenese mobile company NTT DoCoMo and there plans for the mobile phone also if you can be arsed to look through the first few news pages.

Seems the mobile may just become a full fledged pocket entertainment unit to rival the aul ball and tackle :D

More relastic time scale of 3 - 4++ years, nothing like this will show up till well after 3G is rolled out scross the nation.
At the rate things are going it will be some time, licenses for 3G were only offered, what 6 months ago?

Oh the fun of the wait

As pointed out repeatedly, Vodafone already have a 3G network rolled-out and operational in Ireland, since back in June last year. Coverage isn't 100%, but you can get it most urban areas (not including Connemara!). All it takes is for Vodafone to actually start accepting 3G customers, people to buy the handsets, and someone to offer the service. IT could happen tomorrow, if a deal was struck.

I would be given this one 2 or 3 years to be rolled out in this country myself.

True I suppose but you forgot one important thing
Prices for the service have to be sanely priced :D

Was trying to avoid that one. Vodafone, Three and O2 all have 3G networks operational in this country. Vodafone made the "first" 3G call seemingly and were the first to signal their network rollout. Back in May they had in or around 33% population coverage but I would be pretty sure this is hitting at leat 50% at this stage. I had the plessure of making a few video calls the other day, god it was a nasty experience seeing who I was talking too :dunno:

Or else you just have to be insane/rich. Not much differance. And for the small % that is, the service and handsets to accept will prolly be around in 2 years max.

launched to a select number of trialists - i'd usually associate a real service "roll-out" to be when anyone can walk off the street and subscribe to the service

Speaking realistically, of course, you're right. But in theory, were the appropriate deals in place, it potentially happen tomorrow. Sorry if I caused any confusion.
