Anyone any decent tips for speeding up OS X alot, preferably i'd like to ditch the tranparancy and the scaling windows if possible or some decent theme managers that will do the trick,

Looked round the net but havent found much.. not much good :( oldish machine but still faster than 9.2.2

    Cheers

    Steve

Get 'transparent dock', that should start you off on the right foot.

Yeah but I said it much better

    :p

A descriptive link wouldn't have hurt... (as opposed to just 'this page')

    Tinker tool

(I tried to find the descriptive link to transparent dock but couldnt!)

well tried transparant dock and ended up with a comp that wouldnt boot into anything but 9 for about 10 mins before i stripped the dir out, tinkertool is great for some things (fonts smoothing espessially) but no great speed improvments

Tried a few themes too, what i really want to get rid of is the blasted scale / genie effects that are sooooo annoying and slowing me down to hell if i have a few things open..

    Thanks anyhows keep em coming

    P.S. should mention its panther

You can get rid of scale and genie from sys prefs can't you?

I got MacJanitor from VersionTracker, and it's speeded things up nicely. It runs something called Cron scripts, and seems to be the Xquivalent of rebuilding the desktop. You install it, then run the daily, weekly and monthly tasks, restart, and voila! A new machine!

You sure can it's in the Dock preferences panel, just turn off the animated window thingy ! Makes a difference to slower Macs under OS X.

Nope turning off the animation doesnt stop the sacle genie effect, just turns off general animations for icons opening n all, cant seem to find any prog that allows you to turn off that option

setting it to fastest seems to be the best i an do :( pity

cheers for all the links anyhoo

With reference to MOX, does anyone know of a list of services that can safely be turned off. I've disabled the SCSI drivers using MOX but I'm sure there are plenty more I could disable. I presume that, like windows, disabling services and device drivers not required can help speed things up a bit.

    Thanks
