Its much easier to sell players if they have a big reputation, what club are you at?
easiest way to do it is to transfer list the player and then reduce your asking price gradually to zero, maybe in 5 steps down. I think I read somewhere that each time you change the asking price for a player the match engine calculates which clubs might be interested.
But if the player you're selling really is poo, then you'll probably be stuck with him until his contract runs out.

I think the release on a free feature in pretty much set in stone, just like real life, you have to pay the player compensation for the wages he would have earned had his contract run its course, the least you can do since you're kicking him out on his arse :)

A sort of similar problem i'm having:
Is it possible to tell the player to feck off when you let their contract run out? I've got a few players eating up my wage bill and they're on a month to month contract.

go to their little Action drop down (up) menu, there should be a 'release on a free' option there, costs nothing!
