To provide an unencumbered RPM based Enterprise Linux distribution that retains enough compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (version 3 and beyond) to allow easy upgrades and to retain compatibility with their Errata srpms. Being based off of RHEL3 means that a machine should be able to avoid the upgrade treadmill until Oct 2008 since RHEL promises Errata availability for five years from date of initial release and RHEL3 shipped in Oct 2003.

Anybody deployed this in a production/quasi-production environment? If so... do you know where elvis is?

I think John Looney in h365 has just rolled out one or two machines with that on it. We are considering it as a replacement for RH 7.3 and 9. At this point I'm not sure what to go for, but it looks like a winner from a support point of view.

No, but, I have it on good advice that the closed source elvis-binary will run on WhiteBoxLinux.

RHEL3 is a supported platform for the H-Sphere shared hosting system, that's why we're looking at whitebox. It's not doing much yet, but one WhiteBox is part of the h365 shared hosting system now and it didn't put up much of a fight. No surprises so far and we've got hands-free PXE network installs working. One bug though, this might also be a problem in RHEL3 - I haven't checked, it got very upset when asked to partition a 1.2TByte drive and it took me several attempts to get an acceptable partitioning scheme.

    Hmm.

I have to put a new FTP server live.

I'll invent some reason[1] the box needs to be reinstalled and guinea-pig WhiteBox.

[1]I mean... uhh... the life cycle for the OS it's running is <looks at watch> .. well past it's sell date.
