Hotels in NYC

Just got a cheap flight to New York for next weekend, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a hotel. I've been before a couple of times, but I've had both good and bad experiences with the hotels I've stayed in. Can anyone recommend one, and has anyone ever tried those discount websites for booking?

a bloke in work got a really cool hotel ( I think the hilton for little or nothing) on http://www.priceline.com/, he had to do something with the postcode to get them to accept it cos they look for a US ZIP code. You pick an area and bid a price and you have to pay the money before you get the name of the hotel. You get to choose star ratings before you purchase it e.g you can put in dates a 5 star hotel in downtown for $50 a night and you might get accepted.

check out expedia.com - got a good deal from there for a hotel (the presidential) on 48th street (short walk from Times Square) or you could try the HOTEL THIRTYTHIRTY. It's just off fifth avenue on 30th street (very near Empire State building). When I stayed there before (just over a year ago) it was pretty much like an Inn, no restaurant or Bar, just rooms, but you are quite central so that should not be a problem.

Try the Fitzpatrick Hotel on Lexington Ave. It's right in the centre of Manhattan near time square. My sister stayed there last year and she got a cheap deal. It's a lovely hotel, I ate a meal there while I was in New York.

I'm going there on Thursday, staying in the Best Western President. Slap bang in the middle of things. Can't vouch for how good/bad it is. However the reviews on TripAdvisor.com seem to be not too bad, especially considering the location and price

Stayed there at the end of November. It's no Palace, but for the location and price you can't complain. The Room we were in was a bit small, but hey, it's a Hotel room - what do you need buckets of space for?. I would have no problems in recommending it.

Just bumping this a bit. Currently in NYC. This hotel is not too bad.

The rooms are small, but functional. It is slap bang in the centre of everything. The staff (all that I've met) have been very friendly and efficient. It's also near the Grayline Tours office if your that way inclined.

The worst thing I can say about it is that it's quite near a Fire Station which can be a bit of a pain at night, but in it's defense, everywhere in NYC is noisy ;)

I was in NYC for St. Patricks Day 2003 for three nights,
I stayed in On The Ave, we got a good deal, we didn't book direct, used hotels.com.

We had booked a non-smoking room, but when we checked in and arrived into the room it obviously was a smoking room/floor, so we went back down to reception and they changed us to another room immediately.

Besides that minor hiccup, the room was small enough but very comfortable and the bathroom was very stylish, no breakfasts, but there was complimentary coffee in the morning if you were early enough.

A good way of researching hotels in any city I think is checking out peoples hotel reviews on travelocity.
