DirectX Games in Linux?

I'm a complete Linux noob, and was wondering if anyone can tell me how to get it so I can run Half Life and CounterStrike thru it. (In college they disabled sounds and graphics in Windows, but seems OK in Linux....). Got the entire folder on my space (tis how we run it in Windows, but its software mode, and no sound!), this is hosted on the network tho. On trying to run hl.exe from the folder I get Nautilus has no installed viewer capable of displaying "/home/2002/s02bf115/Func Prog/hl.exe"., and the terminal tells me the file cant be found if I try to run it thru there. Anyone know how to be able to do this? Thanks.

Support for Windows games on Linux is fairly poor. The sims is the one game that works best on it.

Have a look at Transgaming's Winex program - http://www.transgamin.com . It's not free by the way.

There's also this HOWTO which describes how to run Half-life under free WINE - http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/hammerton-0.2/book1.html

Not sure how well it will work for you, WINE can be extremely flaky, working fine on some machines/configurations, not at all on others.

Thanks, I'll be giving this a shot, tho being a complete nub with it I expect it to go severely pear shaped! :D

There is a project somewhere or other to provide a DirectX layer of API functionality, as a mask to OpenGL... I think.... somewhere out there.

I doubt it would be fast though, by it's infrasturctural nature, then again, if you throw enough hardware at it....

It would more than likely run crappy, if linux isnt set up with opengl drivers etc.

Suse are doing a distro for windows compatability. Methinks you could make an image of it on your own PC and then burn a bootimage to a CD while still running your game program file from the network.

can you not build and execute wine from within your own userspace? haven't checked this out in a while but I think it was possible to run it as a user without having it fully installed
