Volunteering can be a difficult cultural gap to cross in this materialistic world but it isn't only pain. There is a gain in learning to do something for someone else, it can teach you a lot about yourself and allow you to realise that there is a heart beating inside you even if it's been a while since you noticed it in this highly pressurised world of traffic jams and hard partying. Changing your perception of things even for an hour a week can also unlock the knowledge that certain choices you have made in life are not living up to your expectations and should possibly be changed. There aren't many chances in life to explore completely different sides to the world we live in, volunteering to help someone that is suffering/struggling/in need of a social outlet can show a different side.
The skills that can be developed in volunteerism can provide that extra dimension to your personal advancement and extend your ability. Interacting with people in a setting where you have volunteered to give them assistance can show you another side to the faces you pass in daily life. Each person has their story to tell and given the trust that helping someone engenders, you can hear their story and find something out about your community or even your own history that you didn't realise. Compassion is within everyone, it is unfortunately only a lucky few that get to release it for the benefit of others outside their own family/friends.

It is never too late to start and it is possible to find a little spare time each week...
