Installation of OSX - Problems!

    Hey,

Recently, one of the MACs in the office went belly up after the installation of a new program. On restart, the computer wouldn't start up. It seemed like the OS had become corrupted or something like that, so I took the hard drive from the computer and tried it in a different computer. The HD showed up okay, but seemed to be empty.

I put the HD back in it's original MAC and got the OSX disks to reinstall the operating system. It got to the install with the disks in the drive, but when I step through the installation to the point where it asks to select a destination disk, there is no disk in the list to choose from. How very strange.

I opened up Disk Utility on the same OSX installation CD and low and behold, the drive was there with one volume mounted. I have tried deleting the volume and creating a new one, and erasing the disk and remounting, but my efforts have proven fruitless.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to proceed? It wouldn't be a disaster if we have to get a new disk for or anything, as there was no important info on the disk in the first place (plus it has long been wiped :)) but I'd liked to get it sorted without having to purchase any hardware.

If anyone can think of anything I'd appreciate it very much :)

    Later,

    Serb

    Sorry, I can't help out.

But what program was installed that made the problem, out of curiosity?

I had a problem similar to this a while back. I put the drive in a windows box and fdisked it and formatted it. The mac saw the drive fine then and allowed me to work with it. I guess windoze has it's uses after all !

I suppose you have already tried "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" from within the Disk Utility app. If so, what did it report?

That new program wouldn't be Norton Utilities by any chance ? That's what screwed up my drive.

Yeah format the disk under windows, or try booting from a PM this will allow you to format the disk without removing it.

    Thanks joePC

    Hey,

One of the guys sorted it last night. He said something about updating firmware, which I thought was kind of odd, but then he just formatted it on another machine and it worked.

The program that seemed to b0rk it was Macromedia Fireworks. It was something strange indeed.

Thanks for the replies guys :)
