anyone know of any good places in dublin that sell rucksacks at a reasonable/cheap price? i am looking for a 50L one i think, something not too big for a long weekend shopping (plenty of room for puraches ;)) and big enough to do for a longer stay (a couple of weeks travelling round). is this the right size, and how much should i be prepared to shell out?

    thanks in advance

I can't suggest a shop in Dublin but I do have some opinions on rucksacks. The one I have is this one. It's 55 litres (expandable to 68), which is plenty for a few weeks travel (or more).

    Nice features include:
    - carry-on size (when unexpanded anyway) so you don't have to check your bag in at the airport
    - concealable shoulder and waist straps so you can carry the bag using the carry handle on the side and not look like such an easy mark in a foreign country
    - detachable day-pack so you have a little bag to bring around while sight-seeing
    - expandable via straps on the side so it's only as big as the contents (handy as you pick up souvenirs, etc.)

I thoroughly recommend it though I don't know if this particular model is still available.

For travelling round for a few weeks I would recommend a 60 litre pack, anything bigger isn't really needed but if you buy bigger you will fill it with more stuff you don't need. Try the great outdoors on Chatham Street or the Lowe Alpine store in Temple Bar, they are both owned by the same people anyway. I would recommend Lowe Alpine myself, I have three packs in different sizes from them and they have never let me down. They may cost more but it is worth it. My sister bought a cheap gelert bag going to Australia and it burst in the airport. Sporthouse are a bit cheaper and are well made too, and they are Irish.

The best brand of rukcsack to get, from my own experience, is Lowe Alpine. I bought a 65L in 1996 and have used it for camping, hiking regularly since then. It's still in exzcellent condition, holds loads and is comfortable on the back. I don't know who sells them in Dublin, I bought my directly from Lowe Alpine in Offaly but I'm sure you can get them in Millets or any decent camping shop.

And you get a life time guarantee with them, which is cool.

But you cant do this anymore as thay have moved production out of Ireland.

    Go sporthouse, support Irish.
