Kinda surprised no-one has posted on this. Today saw the fifth and sixth bombs sent to various politicians and officials at various EU institutions..so whats up, is this the work of a couple of hard left/anarchist Italian cranks or somethin more substantial?

I know some smart arse replies are likely (they deserve it, etc) but try and address the topic not your personal politics...

    Mike.

Maybe a plot to get us to sign up to a common defence. Lets put it this way, other countries in Europe could act ambivallently if this were to target Bertie.

Why was a suspect package moved from the Naas Road to Santry Garda Station.

Security alert over parcel for Taoiseach
    From:The Irish Independent
    Thursday, 22nd January, 2004
    Tom Brady Security Editor

A LARGE envelope posted in Rome and addressed to Taoiseach Bertie Ahern caused a security scare yesterday, before it was discovered that it contained post cards.

An Army bomb disposal team was called in by gardai after alert An Post staff intercepted the A5-size envelope at the sorting office at the Naas Road, outside Dublin.

The envelope was placed in a bomb-proof container at Santry Garda Station while the Army ordnance experts were on their way.

Meanwhile, gardai requested police in Rome to check out a name and address which was listed on the parcel.

Mail to the Taoiseach and key government ministers is being carefully screened during the EU presidency because of a number of letter bombs were posted some months ago by an Italian anarchist group, during the period of the Italian presidency.

Might the Naas Road scare have something to do with Dame Street being closed today?

Not directly, Dame St was closed for the EU Justice Ministers conference.

I thought Romani Prodi was the guy who was first targeted? From what I heard the old Italian left wing terrorists were believed to be responsible, protesting against the undemocratic/socialist nature of the E.U. I guess with the Irish taking up the Presidency Bertie and Co have also come to the attention of whoevers responsible. Please God, please.

Doesn't the Italian state have a record of using controversial methods to discredit the hard left/anarchist cranks if it's believed that they're getting a bit too big for their boots? Articles here and here.

"The CIA [Central Intelligence Agency], following the directives of its government, wanted to create an Italian nationalism capable of halting what it saw as a slide to the left and, for this purpose, it may have made use of rightwing terrorism," Gen Maletti told the Milan court. "I believe this is what happened in other countries as well."

    ????

All sides in Italian politics are believed to have had dubious actions carried out in their name.

I didnt claim that all Italian terrorists were left wing, merely that these particular terrorists were believed to be left wing - as in those old Red Brigade(?) boys who kidnapped and murdered that Italian Prime Minister. Some of them were caught in Eygpt about two weeks ago.

If you mean the socialist part, yeah thats where the old thinking to typing got garbled....that should read free market :dunno:

These attacks attributed to Anarchists are very very suspicious.
Nobody in the irish media is aware of any evidence that suggests anarchists are responsible, nobody has claimed responsibility,. nobody has been arrested, Anarchist groups in Italy and around the world have condemned the so called bomb attacks as being pointless and counter-productive and against anarchist principles.

    There are more coherent reasons

    here

and there is a statement from the group in Italy who have been blamed (wwithout any evidence here
