I am about to embark on a DIY satellite installation and am new to the board and the whole satellite business.
I am mostly interested in FTV and any other free channels but would like to able to receive Sky at some stage.

Is this possible with one receiver and can anyone recommend a good one?

I have an 80cm dish, which I believe, came from a Lidl analogue system.
Can it be used with a digital receiver?

    Would appreciate some advice

Unfortunately you cannot receive sky on a non sky receiver. Good receivers are Palcom dsl4 and the strong 4155 for FTA. Some guys who post here also recommend the technomate and drembox.

For the best $ky box I find Panasonic is the one to have!!!! :):):)
For a FTA receiver I'm happy with my Humax.

The Lidl Analouge dish/LNB can be used with a Sky reciever (although youll need to replace the LNB with a quad type for Sky +)

I have a Lidl dish (modified to add a second LNB for Hotbird) with a Panasonic Sky Digibox and a P2 FTV card

I've installed a few of those FTA Strong receivers and although they may be reliable, I hate the remote controls supplied wiht the newer ones (the massive cheap looking universal remote).

I use a Manhattan Skyline myself and although it has been reliable, the software is pretty slow and I cannot update it OTA and can't get a null modem cable at reasonable cost.

I quite like the Topfield receivers (probably a clone of other makes) and it has quick navigation and simple menu system.

    Oh, thanks for that guys!

Didn't realise Donberg sold them! Since I work in an electrical shop and many orders are made to Donberg, I'll add the cable to the next Donberg order!

    Mucho Gracias!;)

I`d go with byte on the topfields. i just bought a topfield 5000, wiht integrated hd.
Great for recording. It also has USB2.0 so you can get the recordings to your computer and make dvds from them.

    More info here

    Ron

PS topfield is not a clone from other makers

If you know for sure that you only want to view free channels then any FTA reciever will suffice and the palcom is a very good reciever.
I would never advise someone new to this to try a dreambox as its more a dev box. Although if you started on a DB and survived, you would know more than most.

Doesnt suit everyone but dont forget the pc/dvb sat card option. I'm glad i went for this option - its cheap and theres no expensive shelling out on cams, etc.

Obviously, it may not suit everyone to have a pc running all the time or to have it direcly connected (or indirectly via video sender) to your tv - but its an option to be considered nonetheless.

What dya mean? I have installed a few Topfields (and Strong) and found them to be good. And I wasn't definite that it was a clone, though thanks radxxx for clearing that up for me.

I had a call today at a guy's house who had Astra and Hotbird both connected to an Xtreme box (dunno model but it had integrated Viaccess and others). It seemed nice too though he reckoned it was slow. Of course it had integrated CAM for possibly obvious reasons! :p

You've lost me now as I thought I had answered your question in the previous post. I had "assumed" that Topfield's may have been clones, though on this thread, I have been assured that they're not clones.
