always wondered 'bout this zine - still very big in russia though isn't it,

it has infotel, rospac and rosnet , the latter not even needing NUI access in some cases

most other countries have and are switching to ip

On that topic, I just started reading through old phracks. They are surprisingly good, I didn't realise that there were zines of that sort of quality. I've just gone through the last 3 issues and a lot of the stuff seems reasonably well written and explained.

Are there any other zines as good ?

    Cheers,
    Gav

theres quite a few still going, maybe not as much as in the past..

    thanks for that,

Couldn't find any that are still going though.. Most are at least a year if not more old. It's interesting really, there doesn't seem to be as much of a hacker community as there was a few years ago. (I'm basing this purely on lack of recent online zines.)

There seems to be more script kiddies just using published exploit code and less people actually writing the code.

People cant afford to play around anymore - in most of the institutes around ireland if your caught even sniffing youll be banned. alot less people have unix accounts to operate out of also and have no idea how to work from te shell. i think we need more wargames... its the only way people can learn without haveing to worry too much about ****ing up. everything is logged these days.

    DaemÈn, try www.hackerslab.org

the whole point is to work from a shell and not get caught in the first place, understanding the system as to educate yourself, sniffing from within your own uni is a bit of a no go, you shouldn't risk ruining a good education like that, i woudln't anyways :)

wargames is a good and fun past-time, anyone want to donate an ip lol..

Verb : the hacker community is as big as it ever was, just gone more and more undeground, back in the days of bbs's - zines were needed, now you just got to surf the net for while to find what ur after . I agree with the code statement, although i can't code myself, theres alot more than compiled exploits to play with :)

Yes, x25 is mainly russian, latest release has
    copy in english.

There are quite a few good zines still around.

Phrack, although good articles to date, aroused some
suspicions with me, I noticed striking similarities
with an Italian e-zine released beforehand.
I thought there may have been a bit of plagiarism going on
    by phrack writers.

Alot of east european stuff, some require usernames/passwords
to access for ..they're paranoid of authorities.
I've heard of 1 from slovakia, another from poland, another
in the u.s which stopped because ..lack of submissions.
    A few from germany..france
Mainly all about reverse engineering, virus writing.
Tried signing up for a few but got no reply.

Other ..I know there are a few good potential groups,
but most of them sit on IRC all day and as a result get
    nothing accomplished.
Biggest problem today when it comes to finding
    new talent.

TKT were..are going now 2 years i think, still nothing.
    More talk than anything..on IRC.
Darkman, Lord Julus..of 29a years ago involved
with that, kiddie-rivalry between Darkman &
    Virusbuster of 29a.

iKx were pretty good when they were about, talk of #6 coming out since
july last year..still nothing, think group is split.

I read a zine by MATRiX group..can't remember now
but, it wasn't as bad as some other stuff around.

Coderz.net, last zine just about got released after 3 long
years..had 2 or 3 interesting things, most notably
    the standalone flash file execution.

Apparently 29a have zine out this month or next which is
    always a good read.

A group called Feathered Serpeants were the funniest..
Started in 96 and didn't release a damn thing until 2001
and when they did, it was total rubbish.Disbanded.

SLAM still talking about releasing something, yet only
to "members" which is funny, i don't think they want
anyone to compare or scrutinise content for quality.

I saw this zine once called Frequency "Inside the hacker mind"
based in new york, has a paper mag too, radio show..etc
Quite amusing, features egotistical people with personality
disorders on stuff..like the Matrix, Hackers, old bell telephones,
red boxes, black boxes..sheesh, all that stuff your grandad
    would talk about.

    Codebreakers teach about compression/encryption/polymorphic
    and cracking executables.

Loads and loads of groups that release stuff, disappear
forever, only the good groups push on, with exception
to Frequency, those guys are mental.

I know most of the zines I mentioned are about ..illegal
    activities, cracking, virus writing.
Thats where alot of future things stem from though.

One to watch out for is 29a#7, whenever that gets released..no idea.
    Soon i hope.

By the way, anyone want to do a one off zine? :)
