The latest eco-friendly car has successfully completed a 4,000-kilometer (~2,500 miles) trek across the continent of Australia. The car was designed by students at Japan's Tamagawa University in Tokyo, and runs on hydrogen and solar power. The only emission coming from the car is pure water, which was drunk by the mayor of Sydney at the end of the event.

The car, named Apollondine after the Greek gods of sun and water, completed the journey in 9 days. It could have been done in as little as four days, but on this first attempt the team was taking extra precautions to make sure the car finished. The greatest problems were found to be in the Blue Mountains, but they were more due to the team having to deal with high temperatures than the car itself struggling.

When asked about viability of the technology for future cars, the organizer, Hans Tholstrup, replied, "How long is a piece of string?" But he believes this is the technology the car manufacturers will be using eventually.
