If your last employer wasn't paying your tax, you have two choices - ignore it, pretend you never earned that money, or you can go down the road of getting them to declare it, and a whole world of trouble.

Chances are if you weren't paying tax, then you weren't listed as an employee of that company, and for intents and purposes, you were unemployed for the past year.

In January, both you and your new employer should receive a certificate of tax credits, which will normalise everything, and they should then pay tax as normal. If you've given them your PPSN, then all should be hunky dory; You'll receive a P60 in January, telling you how much tax you've paid before 31/12/2003. Armed with this and your Cert. of Tax Credits for 2003 (if you have it), you can then apply for your tax back if you're entitled to it. It's too late now to go sorting it out, since it's almost the end of the year :)

Ask your previous employer if he will give you a P45 for last year. If he will, good, if he won't, never mind. Get a hold of whoever does payroll in your new employer, and make sure they will be applying for a cert of tax credits for you, for 2004.

Then, when you receive your P60, take that and your P45(if you get one from your old employer), march down to the tax office and find out where, when and how to apply for a tax refund...

In future, as an employee of any company, you are entitled to a payslip detailing your earnings before tax and the amount and nature of the tax you pay. :)
