How can you insure a non business laptop in Ireland?

The people who do our house insurance (BOI, I think) told me e200 annually.

    Eh, no thanks.

Surely it is insured under house contents? On my policy I only have to list items valued at over €1500. My laptop easily replaced for less than that.

MY old policy was 2000 on a single item exculding laptops. I have to double check what the new policy says. This laptop would cost more than 2K to replace. (its a v.nice one :D)

Nah, because it wouldn't be in the house! :) It would be following me around in college every day, so not really covered.
