Oh I dunno, a student that works for 4 months during the summer?

You bought the PC didn't you, & that probably cost 1500.

I mean if you're seriously thinking of getting into 3D then 300 quid is a tiny investment into your education.

If you want to get into £D and you don't have much money then why are you looking at Maya? Being one of the top-end industry standards it is naturally going to cost alot of money. They released the PLE for the purpose of education, so there is no need for them to try to alleal too much to those without the money to pay for their software. Theres plenty of other far cheaper 3D packages out there which will do the basics just as well as the top software, they just won't have as good rendering engines, animation facilities, particles etc, but for a beginner you are better off just sticking to the basics anyway. When you have gotten the hang of most 3D software, the skills you learn are easily transferrable .. .except to houdini;)

Speaking of Houdini, they have a fully featured learning edition availabe which has no huge view obscuring watermarks, and very few restrictions. It is a very different package however, being very workflow orientated, but well worth a look, especially if you are just starting. From speaking to people it has been alot easier to start in 3d on houdini than it is to transfer from max or maya etc.

I'm not coming at Maya without any previous 3d experience. I used to use Blender but it was too unstable. The watermark isn't bothering me as much as it was when I first started using the PLE(when modelling, it still hurts with every render ;) )

I installed Houdini Apprentice the day after I installed Maya but I only had a quick go of it. I'm hooked on Maya.
I might have another crack at Houdini though if the renders are good.
