Could be posting to the wrong place , if so sorry .

My question if there is someone here could take the time to answer is .

I want a digital camera for all the obvious things a regular person would but I would also like a decent optical zoom for capturing the kids in the water at the beach on their boards . I also want to keep within a budget of 400 euro .

I have spotted a fuji finepix s5000 for 380 euro , Is this good value and/or is there others that maybe I should look at .

    John

The S5000 certainly looks like a well featured camera, and gets a good score on DPreview:

However, one thing I would add, 3MP is now a somewhat low resolution, and I would recommend a higher resolution camera if you can find a good one on your budget.

Maybe consider a Canon Ixus 400, which is 4MP and should cost around the €400 mark.

Got an S5000 a fortnight ago. Heartily recommended, but 380 euro seems high. Mine came in at less than $300 (though I went through eBay - buydig has them for $315 or so).

I'm not sure why you'd go for a higher resolution sensor without going the full dSLR hog - the S5000 was as far as I was willing to go. The S7000, for example, makes little sense to me - it's a 6MP sensor, but it's not that far off the price of a dSLR camera. And if all you want is a camera for point-and-shoot snaps of the kids and the occasional more careful photo, a dSLR strikes me as overkill.

All in all, I'm happy with the S5000 - though I wish they'd put a better manual focus system in there...

So you're not looking for a high-spec preofessional camera, so something small and easy to carry around but still takes good pics would suit you. Check out the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-U50. Its best for for snapshots. Check it out here. Its around €349.

you might try the nikon coolpix 4300 from komplett.ie for e355. just ordered one myself, can only find excellent reviews and seems good value for a 4MP with x3 optical zoom as well as x4 digital. also, have used the coolpix 3100 a bit and seems packed wid cool stuff but really handy.

ended up buying the Fuji finepix s5000 for 381 euro , 10 x optical 2.2 x digital , reviews seem to favour it and its 649 arround town .
