I have a Nokia N-Gage and I can't seem to get the phone connected to the PC properly. The first few times I connected it a folder (F) would pop up on the PC and it would say what things are on the phone. I installed the PC suite for the N-Gage but it said No phone connected. I then took the game out of the phone and when I connect it the PC doesn't detect it at all anymore.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

What OS and Service Pack do you have?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

windows ME. I don't think there is service packs for ME.

Is the bluetooth protocol stack supported by ME. With Windows XP I think you need SP1 for full support. For example, the MS Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse requires SP1.

Bluetooth devices will still work with older versions of windows if you've got an appropriate driver from the manufacturer.

U have to connect it 'as a serial port' for it to work with pc suite. Took me a while to sus that out. I did this by going to "My Bluetooth Places", scanning for devices, right clicking my phones ID, pairing with it and then right clicking again and selecting "Connect via serial port".

I use the 3650 (which is same OS as N-Gage i think) and a sitecom USD bluetooth dongle. Im using XP Home. Should b the same tho.

Bluetooth support in XP is very limited - the implementation supplied with the MS Keyboard and Mouse didn't even support the Serial Port Profile

the current situation (until better XP support is available - with SP2) is you load the drivers / software that come with the Bluetooth adapter and use those - the Widcomm implementation being the most widespread and best implemented of the solutions currently out there

what type of Bluetooth adapter are you using - what manufacturer / model is it?

if the supplied software is based on the Widcomm implementation - you can try these steps to see how you get on with the PC Suite

Getting the nGage to work is a bit of a git...

    FIRSTLY....

I suggest you visit http://www.Mobiledia.com & look through their site for tips on getting a 3650 to connect via bluetooth - cos it's the same for nGage

Secondly - to get the nGage to "see the PC" & vice-versa, you need to establish a SERIAL connection once the phone has been picked up - that way PC suite will see it...

Thirdly - Go for D-ink/Belkin USB bluetooth adapater & search for drivers for the ANYCOM USB Bluetooth & install it using those drivers....

I've had my nGage for a few months now since it first came out in the USA & it was a git to get working - but once your up & runnin - start checking out apps & stuff - here's some helpful links:

I'm at the stage where I've got FULL DVd's on my nGage, not to mention TONS of really uselful apps, games, music - the works - hell, I've even reversed my contacts list from lastname, firstname to firstname, lastname & have 'themes' on my phone..... I've gotten 90mins of a DVDRip into 55MB on an MMC card & it's pretty cool for when your flying - esp. if you've a 512MB card, means you can stick it in flight mode (Offline mode) & off you go

Hope this helps - if it doesn't - PM me, I can help you out, or at least try to....

one final thing - LEARN how to bluejack - it's fun & a great way to have a laugh down the pub - http://www.bluejackq.com

I got bluejacked down my local & had a porn movie sent to me - needless to say I didn't think the "regulars" down my local were technically inclined given their knuckle-dragging propensities.....remember: bluejacking - helping you make friends in the 21st century ;)

alternatively for those who don't want to be bothered...

you can set you phone to hidden, where it would only be available to previously paired (authorised) devices
    series60_bt_hidden.gif

or completely off until you actually need it, where you can squeeze a bit more juice ouit of the battery
    series60_bt_off.gif

might also want to choose a Bluetooth Name carefully, in case someone 'less friendly' decided to target you... i.e. not to broadcast your full name or phone model

when you start getting the marketing 'people' jumping on this by spamming everyone, undesirable content and even worse malicious applications being sent - the craze might loose it's 'making friends' sheen from some

until better XP support is available - with SP2

Does anyone know know any more specifics of this? A quick google-schmoogle only turned up fluffy non-specific information quoting ver. 1.1 is supported - any idea of the far out and outlandish suggestion that MS might implement a BT profile or two

The SP 2 Beta Fact Sheet mentions:

Bluetooth update. Windows XP SP2 includes updated support for Bluetooth®, enabling customers to take advantage of the latest wireless devices, including a number of wireless keyboards and mice, wireless printers, and connections with cell phones and PDAs.

So still a little vague but more than the HCRP, HID and DUN implemented for the adapter with the MS Bluetooth keyboard/mouse.

Some 'first looks' at SP2 are appearing, but nothing (i've come across) that goes into any depth on the Bluetooth enhancements (as yet)

depending on the circumstances it can be better to stick with the appropriate drivers for the adapter, especially as Belkin's latest range of USB adapters use more up-to-date drivers that Anycom does. Anycom have also removed direct downloads from their site

Most Widcomm drivers are tied to a specific adapter so one needs to be very careful about trying to mix and match one vendors Bluetooth downloads with another vendors Bluetooth adapter

definately more profiles supported - including PAN, File Transfer (OBEX) and the long awaited Serial Port, although currently getting them working isn't exactally a dream but such is the way with betas...

Geeze you PC guys seem to have been left behind when it comes to Bluetooth!! The Mac has accepted any Bluetooth device I've chucked at it - phones (6310i - T610) Keyboards - Mouse - PDA's - even a bluetooth handsfree thingy !!!

MS decided not to support Bluetooth natively with the release of XP and it wasn't built into the Operating System although at that stage Bluetooth was only just being delivered (limited support arrived when the MS BT Keyboard and Mouse were launched) - currently with certain 3rd party Bluetooth drivers for the PC you can get additional functionality compared to Apple's implementation

Apple took a different strategy by focusing mainly on the cable replacement aspect of Bluetooth leaving the networking etc. to Airport. They used Bluetooth as their wireless equivalent to USB/Firewire as they used Airport as their wireless equavilent to Ethernet

    wireless.gif

however SP 2 for XP addresses the necessity of having to use 3rd party drivers and applications, they just have to try and make it as user friendly an experience as Apple have achieved with OS X - being able to plug the BT adapter into XP and it repond like OS X does is great (and long overdue) - even in beta the XP integration is quite impressive compared to the current situation - although still rough around the edges...

I have Xp without SP's..and it works ok. I have the "Sitecom" BT adapter on sale in maplins for 38 euro. I use drivers on the disc and everything worked first time. Nokia suite likes it too.

unfortunately with the different implementations used by different Bluetooth adapter vendors, the different versions of those implementations and zero driver support native to XP - in many cases it doesn't make for a happy user experience - thannkfully it's matured from the black art it used to be when devices began to appear - but on Windows it's still not there yet...

when it is finally installed even trying to do tasks that should be easy like connect Symbain PC Suite to a handset, or set up Active Sync for a PDA all involves delving into configurations and identifying COM ports - setting those COM ports in different places and then crossing your fingers to try and get things working :)

your average user shouldn't have to know what a COM port is or have to locate and configure settings in various 3rd Party implementations - it also causes hassle for developers and Bluetooth device manufacturers having to try and support all these different Bluetooth implementations and versions of those implementations - if it's native in the OS (and implemented well) a lot of headaches disappear for everyone

compare to an OS X 10.2+ Mac where you plug in (almost) any USB adapter and Bluetooth works pretty much seamlessly, it has a great user interface and smart step through configuration tailored to the particular device being set-up

this is the direction being moved to with XP Service Pack 2 - being able to just plug in (almost) any adapter and have XP bluetooh enabled - a friendly user experience and no drivers / 3rd party implementations - a common ground for the developers and device manufacturers- basically what was promised when Bluetooth was being hyped back in the day before any equipment existed...

That was indeed true until Panther arrived which introduced bluetooth networking and firewire networking.

How long will it be before XP offers this form of bluetooth integration? I attempted to add b/t to my XP box a while back (SP1) with little success at the time. Currently in order to sync my iPaq I need to insert it into a cradle via USB to the PC, it would be a lot handier to do this wirelessly !

there's no Bluetooth Networking (unless you're using a different Panther to me ) - there is file exchange and browsing (which was in Jaguar too) - but no virtual Bluetooth network adapter implemented or a way of accessing a Bluetooth Network Access Point...

supposed to be mid '04 - i'm sure it will be like most things on XP - a work in progress ;)

if you can get a Bluetooth USB adapter that uses the Widcomm implementation (it's the best and easiest to use), e.g. TDK, Belkin, MSI... you can get it working after some tinkering with COM ports etc...

I got the "Sitecom" Adapter, installed the CD software (on Windows XP Home with no service packs), it gave me a "My Bluetooth Places"...i clicked it, scanned for devices, then right clicked on my phone name and clicked "Connect to Serial Port" and it worked fine, no problems since. It was a cheapy adapter too, 38 euro as said in a post above. Very handy.

My mate has a new Power Mac G5 (Dual 2GHZ) with built in bluetooth, it is very very handy. MAC OS wipes the floor with Windows imho.

i wasn't saying it doesn't work :) and the drivers/software you are using (by Widcomm) are the best implemented of the bunch - but many people aren't as tech savy as you are (nor should thet have to be), even working out or knowing how and what to scan for, what service to connect to and depending on the software they are using if they have to configure that also isn't exactally a smooth operation - also if they weren't as fortunate to get an adapter that had modern versions of the Widcomm implementation it can be even more of a black art...

Yep, I know. Thats what I have mine as.

When you do get the urge to Bluejack some poor clueless, they get "Virus Transfer Complete wants to connect??"

Also have a stored entry in phonebook under the same... a bit sad I know, but can be funny in college sometimes!

I was in the bodega in cork on friday night and did a search for available devices on my t610 and found loads of phones, including another t610, so I sent off loads of "You're a Langer" contacts.. Pointless and inane, I know, but I got a kick out of seeing some very confused "young professionals" with a look on their face like they'd just been violated! Brilliant

If u look on the CD of that phone (my ma has it), u will see they advertise their Bluetooth car kit and headsets, maybe thats all their bluetooth supports. I'll try sending some stuff to it via my bluetooth dongle 2morro. Decent enough phone for the price though.

The V600, V525 and V500 have been qualified with the same bluetooh implementation and profiles:
    - Dial Up Networking (DUN-GW)
    - File Transfer (FT-Server)
    - General Access (GAP) for service discovery
    - Handsfree (HandsFree-AG)
    - Headset (Headset-AG)
    - Object Push (OPP-Client and OPP-Server)

might be interoperability issues with other handsets, doing a service discovery from a PC should confirm which are functioning on the V525
