Not 100% sure if she was the first but Greer Garson is the first I know of. She won an Oscar in 1942 for Mrs. Miniver, which was based during World War 2 and how she led her family through the bombings.

She died in 1996 and starred in other films such as Julius Ceaser and Goodbye Mr Chips.

i've looked at greer garson and it seems that she claimed that she was born in ireland but other people say she was born in london. don't know what to think now.i'd need a definate answer

I've looked at a few sites, some say London, some say Ireland.

I tried several sites and both London and County Down
are mentioned - one site managed to suggest she was born in both!
