I got my OEM Pioneer A06 from blankdiscshop.co.uk for 83.48 stg.

(It cost about 20 stg to deliver though !!!! that said I did buy tons of blank DVDS and another burner for a mate so overall it worked out alright).

    what makes the pioneer superior?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

The Pioneer is far better in the media compatibility stakes.

I was looking at the NEC myself, at the time blankdiscshop were selling both drives, however if I looked at their media list, more than half said not recomended for use with the NEC1300A, the Pioneer had no such problems and thats what I was sold on in the end.

    what makes the pioneer superior?

The Pioneer is the most popular burner out there right now. Therefore, there are more hacks out there for the Pioneer burner (regionfree hack, speedhack etc).

Also because it is a popular burner, a lot of media is tested directly against Pioneer burners, which is probably why the Pioneer has the best media support.

I have the Pioneer 105 (same as A05). I must say I'm really happy with it. I was going to buy a multi-standard burner, but fortunately, I went with the pioneer in the end.

Actually, I got the 105 just cause I bought it before the 106 came out.
If you're looking at pioneer burners right now, you should probably look at the 106 or A06 (they are both the same burner, one is the OEM version and the other one is the boxed version).

Also, there is a Teac burner that is really the 106 rebranded. If you can get that one cheaper (don't recall the modell number), you should definately get that one instead. All the 106 stuff, including bioses, will work for the Teac.

I bought the Pioneer 106 months ago. I do a lot of burning, both CD and DVD, and have used some pretty cheap discs too as you can imagine... but I've only had 1 coaster in all that time.

Best burner I've ever owned tbh.

OEM equipment doesn't come with a fancy box or manuals. probably no software either. The actual hardware is exactly the same.

Original Equipment Manufacturer IIRC. Usually OEM software/hardware, as Stephen says, is a stripped down version of a retail product. You don't the the box, usually you won't get the 'free' software, and the manual contains just enough information to get the thing up and running (if included at all). It's worth noting that some vendors change bundled devices/cabling too for the OEM editions, ATI OEM products for example often don't include the connection-box-thingy (that's the technical term I believe).

As for where I buy my blank discs, it varies. I've bought media from Marx computers, Peats, and BlankDiscShop recently.

BlankDiscShop are selling it for £83.48 which works out at €118.91 (+shipping). That's where I bought my 106 anyway, and shipping was £20 +vat at the time for that drive, and a lot of media. Unfortunately, the drive is currently out of stock on their website, but they're still a fair bit cheaper than komplett :(

I think I'll go with kanection.co.uk. Bloody hell, thats saved me a good few quid ;)

and... once you have bought the Pioneer 106, you have to flash it...

    http://pioneerdvd.firmware-flash.com/index.html

scroll bottom up on that page, and you'll find a firmware for the 106/A06 that makes the drive region-free, increases ripping speed from 2x to 12x, and increases the burnspeed for certain DVDs.

whats ripping speed? + region free? (newbie to dvd here)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 493 ✭✭muffen

whats ripping speed? + region free?

Ripping is when you copy the content of the DVD disc to the HD. You can rip movies, music etc.

Region free is for watching/ripping DVD movies. By default, you can only change the region 5 times, but with this firmware, the number of times you can change region is unlimited.

You would need to burn the file onto a cd and boot from it most likely.

    Pioneer DVR-106 v1.07 RPC-1 + 2xDVD-R + 12xRip

I've just flashed my drive recently without any problems using the OEM_Pioneer_DVR-106_UNIVERSAL_Flash_1.0.zip downloaded from the link below.
    http://flashman.rpc1.org/Firmware/PIONEER/DVR-106D/

This file flashes all Pioneer DVR106 Drives Retail or OEM and makes them region free, 12X rip and 2xDVD-R.

There is no need to put the files on a floppy, you can flash the drive from the DOS prompt from within Windows.

If you need any help, I'll be more than happy to run you through the process.

i got the Optorite 4x +/- off ebay for £75 (lucky last minute bid). kelkoo have THEM for £78, and the newer 8x burners for £101 too, which might be nice if you're a speed freak. :D

both do HD-Burn too, which means you can put 1.4gb onto a standard 700mb cd-r by using the increased precision of the dvd laser (smaller pits you see!). handy for cheap backups where you don't want to waste a dvd-r.

overall I'm very happy with it, and haven't had any problems so far.

Are HD-burned CD-Rs readable in regular DVD-ROM drives? Or even CDROM/RW drives (doubtful!)?

    Ordered a NEC ND-2500 from computeruniverse.net.

Price: €148,91 (ex. VAT) but inc. delivery to Ireland.

If you can purchase ex-VAT then this site may be of use to you.

    NEC-1300a from Jes-Computer only €94.

It would be nice if the postage was cheaper though. Don't knock the 1300 either, with the right driver flashed i it works a dream.

    Ok, here goes.

First off, remove any discs from the drive and make sure you don't have any Intel Application Accelerator or any third party IDE controller accelerators or drivers installed.
    Close all running programs.

If you are running XP, you won't need to use DOS. Just edit the flasher.pif file so it corresponds to your Pioneer drive letter.

To do this, go to flasher.pif properties and choose the program tab.
In the cm line box you will see the folowing:

    DVRFlash.exe -v -f G: R6100006.105 R6100106.107

As you can see, drive letter G: is the default.
If your drive is different to this then change it to the correct drive letter, making sure to use uppercase.
    Apply and exit.

Now just click on flasher.pif and it will guide you through the process.
If you have an OEM drive you will receive a mismatch error, this is expected.
These instructions should also work with Win2K.

If you are running Windows 98, the instructions are similiar except you need to find the SCSI ID No. of your drive instead of the drive letter.

The easiest way to do this-
Create a folder on your C drive called flash.
Extract contents of OEM_Pioneer_DVR-106_UNIVERSAL_Flash_1.0.zip to the folder.

Go to the ms-dos prompt from within windows.
    type
    cd\ [enter]
    cd flash [enter]

To get the SCSI ID no. of your drive.
    Type
    dvrflash -v 0.0.0 [enter]

If your Pioneer drive details appear, the SCSI ID No. of your drive is 0.0.0.
If they don't appear try dvrflash -v 1.0.0, dvrflash -v 1.0.1 and so on until you find the correct ID.

Once you have this you can either edit the flasher.pif and replace the drive letter with the SCSI ID No. you've just acquired or simply use the following syntax to flash the drive

    DVRFlash.exe -v -f x.y.z R6100006.105 R6100106.107

Note: x.y.z should be replaced by your Scsi ID no.

    That's it, good luck.

I haven't dealt with Kanection before but their delivery charge to Ireland is £12 [€17]
If it's the retail version it's not a bad deal, it works out at about €155 incl del.

Having said that, you can get the new Pioneer DVR-107 8x OEM from Overclockers for €180 incl del.
Well worth the extra few quid.

Personally, I bought the Pioneer DVR-106 OEM from OC'ers. Cost €145 incl del and took about a week to arrive.

Another consideration might be Digital Media Direct.
I seen an ad for this place recently. They're based in Tallaght and sell the Pioneer 106 for €150.
They also have blank DVD-R's, Cases ect

SVP have the Pioneer 106 for €122 + delivery and the 107 for €143 + delivery. They also have a NEC 1300 4x writer for €87 + delivery. Personally I would go for a Pioneer, they have by far the best reputation.

Those looking at the 106 should now consider the 107 - Pioneers latest 8X model for future proofing.

I recently bought an 8x NEC 2500a burner from Jes Computer at €119.95. Delivery cost €17 for the drive and 10 blank dvdrs. It was the cheapest at the time. Delivery took nearly 2 weeks though but still, I wasn't in a rush.

I only bought a spindle of 10 4x Princo DVDrs to try out, and they seem fine. I burned one at 8x max speed and surprisingly it worked, though probably a fluke.

Paul, quick question about the 106 as you seem to know a bit about them. Someone in work said I should enable DMA for this drive, but whenever I do the machine reboots itself constantly. Whenever I turn DMA off it works fine and I haven't had any problems with what I've burned so far. Was the guy in work leading me up the garden path?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 192 ✭✭Paul007

    SteM

Ideally, DMA should be enabled on any IDE devices as in most cases it improves overall performance. The 106 definately supports it as I have it enabled myself.

Unfortunately, not all system architecture supports it so if you're having problems it's best to leave it disabled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,031 ✭✭✭SteM

Cheers, I'll leave it disabled as the PCs definately more stable like that.
