I've gotten really into AC/DC lately because I dragged out some of their old stuff while rummuging through my cd collection. I found Razor's Edge and Highway to Hell but want to get a few more albums.

So seeing as you folks probably have lots of knowledge of them what would be the best few albums to get next?

    Cheers for your help!¬

    and yay, twas seen !

First off let me say that all of the albums have been re-released with better sharper sound by Sony's EPIC label. If you are going to buy albums, make sure to get his variation. Many of the albums get looked over in light of Black In Black and Highway to Hell, so I am gonna do my own little opinion list. Its in not way foolproof, and perhaps not for the die hard fan, but it should give a good feel :D

Get It Ratings from 1 to 5..

    1976 HIGH VOLTAGE
Where it all began. The very first ac/dc song that hit my ears was Rock N Roll Singer, which is from this album. This is also the album with the first version of The Jack. It also contains the big hits in Australia at the time, Can I Sit Next to You Girl, and Its a Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock N Roll).

    Get It Rating : 4

1976 DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP
Some people think I'm some kinda tit when I dont recommend this album. Theres not enough in there to justify the purchase, and the big hits are done again in later albums with better listings.

    Get It Rating : 2

    1977 LET THERE BE ROCK
Angus beating the hell out of your ears with cracking solos. Like a hummbird on speed, this album is a must. Dont even look at the track list, just do get it. In fact, I must get the remarsted copy for xmas as a treat :D

    Get It Rating : 5+

    1978 POWERAGE
This baby has more groove than any other album. GoneShootin appears on this, so for that reason alone its a must. But it also contains the first showing of Riff Raff. Riff Raff is what Angus Young is all about. Watch out for Up To My Neck In You, its a song that is normally looked over by many people, but its got a great long solo....

    Get It Rating : 5+

    1978 IF YOU WANT BLOOD
If you never heard Bon live (like me) then this is a close substitute. Its got all the big hits of the time, and includes the REAL lyrics to The Jack. I must get this one in its remastered version also.

    Get It Rating : 5+

    1979 HIGHWAY TO HELL
You already have it, so I'll move on. If anyone else is thinking about getting it, then the answer is GO GET IT NOW. Its the true classic of Bons time.

    Get It Rating : 5+

    1980 BACK IN BLACK
If you dont have this already then you should be slapped. The remasterd version of this damn near blew up my stereo system for want of decibels. It requires playing it loud, and much head moching. Its the daddy of any other rock album of any other band, bar none. You simply have not lived son...

    Get It Rating : 5++

1981 FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK
Cannons. Its got cannons. Great big fuck off cannons. The anthem that is For Those About to Rock. People try to convince me that this was ment to be an equal to Back In Black. Its not, not even close. But BIB was so far off the scale that it had to be a once off. For Those About To Rock is a must though. Its solid, its dark, the guitars cut through the air. This was the last album of the Mutt Lange (HTH, BIB, FTATR) age, and he left on a kick ass note.

    Get It Rating : 4.5

    1983 FLICK OF THE SWITCH
AC/DC did this one themselves. Production, mixing, the works. It gets lost in the mud that was the mid 80's. A shame, as its one of my all time fav albums. I would put this over The Razorz Edge anyday. Its loud, its heavy guitar, its Brian kicking ass. You can get the sense that AC/DC were just having a real go at HARD ROCK in this one. Get this one to make sure that your ears get an audio assault.

    Get It Rating : 5

    1984 '74 JAILBREAK
I dont have it, and theres a reason. The track list is average. Get it only if you find it for next to nothing

    Get It Rating : 1

    1985 FLY ON THE WALL
Terrible. Absolutely dreadful. I got this to see just how bad it was. I have not played it since I got it over 4 years ago.

Get It Rating : 0.5 (the half is for morbid curiosity)

    1986 WHO MADE WHO
A compilation disk. Theres only two original good songs in here. Who Made Who and Chase the Ace. Chase The Ace is an excellent instrumental and the album is worth getting for that alone. Its got Shook Me All Night Long on it from BIB aswell, so that helps a tad.

    Get It Rating : 2.5

    1988 BLOW UP YOUR VIDEO
Its in the same league as Fly On The Wall. Blow Up This Disk. Nuff said.

    Get It Rating : 0

    1990 THE RAZORS EDGE
You already have this, so fair play. This was the 2nd comeback for AC/DC. A very succesfull album with a huge mother of a world tour. The Razor Edge (the track) is perhaps the darkest they have ever done, perhaps even more dark than Hells Bells and Spellbound. However, for those without it, dont worry. Read below to see why.

    Get It Rating : 3

    1992 LIVE
This album got me in trouble with the parents for waking my granny at 2AM. I was coming home from a sober night out and but this up far too loud. Its got a hits of The Razors Edge, aswell as every other required AC/DC track. In my opinion its one of the best live albums ever made. As above its when AC/DC made a 2nd massive comeback, and made sure that they were going to be remembered for a long long time.

    Get It Rating : 5+

    1995 BALLBREAKER
AC/DC come back from the recent tour break. Its a good solid rock album. I would put this above The Razors Edge also. You wont see it on any high chart sales ratings, but it should not be looked over.

    Get It Rating : 3.5

    1997 BONFIRE
5 CD Box Set of rock ownage. Its a must for any collector, or indeed someone that wants to get a large range of AC/DC talent in one purchase. If you can afford it, then go get it !

    Get It Rating : 5

    2000 STIFF UPPER LIP
People say that the 5 year wait for this album was wasted. Those people are full of shit. I said earlier that Powerage had the most groove. SUL comes damn close. It shows that AC/DC can still produce real good stuff. If you dont like Stiff Upper Lip (the track), and if you dont move any appendige to it, then you dont really like AC/DC at all. Brians voice sounds fantastic, and its really well produced. Dont take the double "+" as a sign that it equals Back In Black, but take it as a sign that I really really like it :D

    Get It Rating : 5++

As an aside, there are some great AC/DC DVD's that would make a great addition to your collection (assuming you have a DVD player).

    All of em :D

But if you must limit yourself to one :

    1) AC/DC LIVE AT DONNINGTON

Epic have released this in their own flavour, and its definately worth buying. If you want to know what AC/DC is like live, then this is required viewing

    2) Stiff Upper Lip Live

This is from the "recent" SUL tour. The boys in action at their grand ol age, and proof that they can still rock. A pretty standard setlist, but you should buy it if you have the cash.

    3) No Bull

I love the setlist, but I dont love the sound production. Best crowd atmosphere of all three though.

Cheers GoneShootin. Has given me an indication of what I'll buy. So I'm going to get Stiff Upper Lip, Back in Black and Live for now, maybe pick up the others in the New Year

    Wise choices indeed.

One thing I forgor to mention was the LIVE album has two versions, the single disk and double disk. Get the double disk, its teh win !

Gone Shootin speaks wisdom, lad. Get the ones rated 4 and above first. Then get the others if you really like AC/DC. I kinda feel like Fly on the wall is slowly growing on me in a really cheesy way. And I found that I really liked Blow Up your video. But nyeh, 'tis just me. Be absolutely sure you get Let there be rock. It's probably still my favoroute, even though I lost it ages ago...

Either way it's still selling. And I don't have a copy so I'm going to get one.

Old AC/DC(Bon Scott): You must get Powerage. Brilliant!
New AC/DC(Brian Johnson): Back in Black. Classic!
I would definitely advise you to get both Donnington and
Stiff Upper Lip live on DVD. Those guys know how to rock.
The picture and sound quality is excellent.
I have seen them live, in London. Sh1t it's 14 years ago approx
and I'm still trying to get over it!

Rumour has it they'll be coming to Ireland soon (Slane perhaps?). That'd just rule!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭GoneShootin

unfortunetly that rumour has been going around in the circles for a long time. the best time for that to happen was last year if THE STONES had shown up in Ireland and the ticket sales happened to be poor. AC/DC toured with the stones for 3 gigs in germany and 1 gig in the UK becuase THE STONES had poor ticket sales at those venues. Needless to say, AC/DC kicked THE STONES all over the stage. Ask anyone who was the best band at the SARS-STOCK gig in Canada over the summer and they will tell you that AC/DC stole the show

Would be nice if they came back with Metallica even to kind of repay the favour of Metallica supporting them in 1991 i think it was.

Reading Ireland could be their opportunity

    AC/DC support Metallica?

Over my dead body! AC/DC are still valid :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭James R

To be honest I wouldn't care if they supported Westlife just once they came here

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,478 ✭✭✭GoneShootin

No they will never support Metallica. You see The Young Brothers grew up with THE STONES, and to support them on tour made sense.

Do you think they'd support Aerosmith then? (like a lot of rumours have said).

Cheers for the sites just about to check 'em out.

No that would never happen either imo. If anything it would be the other way around.

We will have to wait until the next album is released before we see AC/DC tour worldwide again, whenever that is gonna be.
