Complaint Repercussions

We have this particular lecturer only once every week. On our first class with her, she left after 20 mins saying she needed coffee, but since then has alwayz left the room after 20-30 mins.

She justs sits there reading from her notes and if we ask her a question, she re-reads the sentence. If someone questions her notes, she gets very defensive and abusive. Three weeks ago, she told us we were getting an assessment the next week (she hadn't given us any handouts) and that we were to print the notes off blackboard. There was 30 pages of stuff.

The next Friday she gave us a Summer style exam. Everyone failed. She was embarrased herself. She said she was giving us the same exam the next Friday so everyone went off and learnt the stuff on the original paper. The next paper was different. Everyone barely passed. But that morning, this guy was taking his pencil case out of his bag while she was giving out the papers so he didn't hear her tell us not to turn over the page until they were all given out. He turned over his when she gave it to him and she said : "Is there something wrong with you? Can you not understand English?" That is just a small example of her ignorant behaviour. She's like this all the time and she was just as nasty when i was in first year.

We all (the class) want to complain her but no one knows who we should say it to, and our class rep is worried that if he says it, she'll be down his neck all year and fail him. If one of us goes to our class tutor, she might say it to this lecturer.

We were telling our Multimedia lecturer about this and he said that it's true for him when he's correcting exams that his opinion of the person does affect how he corrects the paper.

Is there anyway for us to complain her without repercussions?

Get the whole class to sign a petition and show it to her that you are not happy with her teaching methods. If you go over her head without saying it to her first she'll only be worse to you. If her attitude doesnt improve then you should tell the department head. If she tries to fail you all, then she'll be under the spotlight.

    be very wary
from what I hear it's very hard to make a complaint which; 1) gets a result you want & 2) doesn't effect either the whole class, or the people who lodged the complaint.

if I knew correct way to make complaint, and thought it would make a difference, I would get 2 lecturers sacked from our course, and a few more taken off teaching altogether!

Possibly talk to the Students Union and ask their advise, as they have probably seen such issues before, and may at least be able to tell you how NOT to approach it ...

Go and talk with the SU about it. But make sure they understand your worries about you getting in trouble with her if she knows it was you. Remember they are the student body representing you. They have to help you.

This guy in the other class is having trouble with a different lecturer. He's dyslexic and has to get notes before anyone else otherwise he hasn't a clue what's going on in the class. This particular lecturer didn't give him any notes even thought he asked loads of times.

Then the guy went to the Student Union, who did nothing. So he went to Joe Kehoe who said he'd sort it out. Joe obviously said something because a few days later when the class was over, the lecturer called this guy back and threatened him. He went back to Joe and Joe promised him there would be war over it and said the lecturer would get a written warning.

This all happened two weeks ago, and the poor guy still isn't getting his notes.

So it was all for nothing.

Get them to kick their ass in gear. Lodge a complaint with all your classes signature then. You can't let a lecturer ruit your college year. If ye all go as a group there ain't a lot she can do about it.

Should get more for threatening a disadvantaged student, a smack in the mouth, i wouldn't take that ****e from anyone. One student comlaining wont do much cos they'll think that the individual has a problem with the lecturer but an entire class making a complaint, that would be taken quite seriously.

If he is dyslexic tell him to have a chat with the student welfare officer as he is prob entitled to a minidisc player from the college to record lecturers, and depending maybe a laptop as well,
Alot of people dont realise the department of education has measures in place to help out in the situation

TBH Headcase the students union is not exactly a shining example of efficiency (me and munch had an encounter with their efficiency last year)

There is no real way to lodge complaints in the college...and joe keogh cant really be depended on to sort out all the problems (he is running the dept!)

So in short i think the only way to deal with a lecturer like that is
    1) Confrontation
    2) Dont go to lecturers.

    and neither are good

Moonbeam; do you remember how Miss Piggy/Power Ranger/Margret Power was dealt with?

This sounds very much alike that problem, if not more so.

Also, who was the complaints sent to?

Regarding the original problem here's what I'd do.

The correct way would be for everyone to up and leave the room with her when she goes for her coffee. Stand outside the staff canteen. Go and hold up placards if you are so inclined!!. The very moment she leaves the class room, the class rep should go up and inform the head of dept. and/or secretary. Better again, the College Principal. Let them know that you're waiting for her outside the canteen. Let her make her excuses to her boss. However, also make it clear to the head that there may be fall out from this action and that you need back up in that eventuality.

I know Joe K. He's cool. I did software engineering in Carlow and came out with an MSc a few years ago. Even lectured there as well during my time. Back then, the computing department had a really good rep amongst all the RTC's, sorry, IT's. Yes, I had Eamon Cass as well. Don't know who else is still there but that's probably besides the point. Point is, muppets like this harlot need to be kicked out if they can't do their job right. You suffer at the end of the day.
