Help with Yamaha system

I need help in regard to a system that I bought in Peats yesterday. I bought it for 5.1/surround sound for use with my dvd player. My DVD player is Pioneer one with only a digital co-ax output and not an optical one. I bought the Yamaha HTR 5630, it looks to me that it only has an optical input for the DVD and a digital co-ax input for CD. I rang Peats and they told me I just have to use the CD input and it will work. Is this the case? I don’t think they are right but I am not quite sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

Use the digital coax output on your DVD player and connect to coax in on your Amp. as suggested by peats. You will need to invest in a digital coax cable and I would recommend paying at least £20stg for one. Try these.

Looking back through my emails I bought 1 * Ecosse producer @ £17.99 from the site above. Class coax cable.

Will it work even though the co-ax input is for the CD player, the sound only comes out when the amp is set to CD and not DVD. Surely it reads this as just a cd input?

As far as I can see, this amp will treat both digital inputs the same. Depending on the type of digital input coming in, the amp will set itself up accordingly. The simple test of this is to connect the DVD to the CD coaxial input and try to play a surround DVD. Do all speakers kick in?

Better still would be to play a DTS recording via the CD input. Does the DTS icon on the front of the Yamaha unit light up? If it does, you are in business.

If not, and you are only getting stero sound from your DVDs, then there are two possible options for you:

    1) If the Pioneer DVD has an on-board decoder and 6ch analog audio output, you can connect to the Yamaha 6ch input using 3 stereo RCA cables.

    2) Purchase a Coaxial SPDIF to Optical TOSlink converter unit. You should be able to get one in Maplin for around €20 - €30. Make sure it is compatible with Dolby Digital and DTS signals.

I played the matrix last night and it seemed like just stereo to me. All speakers are playing the sound though. I don't really want to have to spend more money for a co-ax to optical converter though, seeing as they told me it would work with the co-ax if it doesn't I'll just ask for my money back. Option 1 won't work though as it doesnt have an on board decoder. Cheers for the help
