Well the controversy had the effect of getting bertie Ahern into the Dail to explain himself on the last day this year even though bertie doesn't do thursdays. The senator that does constituency work for him handled the representation which was made by a brother on behalf of the a roscommon quarry owner who is suffering with cancer. There doesn't seem anything on the surface about this, bertie didn't see the outgoing letter eventhough his signature didn't appear on it but then again is it any wonder with all the representations he would receive.
Planning issues have been central to some nasty tribunal worthy stuff...there should really have been a more street-wise attitude to the pitfalls of writing to a local official with the power of the taoiseach's office on the letter (implicitly). It's not a great decision by whoever did it. The Taosieach's department had done nothing but deny any letter had been sent according to it's records.
