Article on NewScientist about the first test flight of one of the competition's favourites.

Bought Focus magazine this week which had an article on this team, Scaled Composites and their entry. Essentially their approach is similar to the Pegasus rocket technique, the rocket is carried up to about 15Km on a plane and launched from there, thereby getting over the initally huge fuel requirement of getting the rockect off the ground in the 1st place

They designed and built their own carrier plane called White Knight and it is one of the most amazing looking aricraft i've seen. The rocket itself is called Space Ship One.
