It's been rumoured that Peter Jackson may pick up Best Director as a nod to the whole trilogy, and that it may win Best Film.
But does anyone think any acting Oscars will go its way?

    Who cares?

In all fairness, the Oscars are a shambles. Titanic winning 11 Oscars?
Does anyone still consider the Academy Award as any kind of acheivement?

It's pretty much a certainty that it will take best picture, director and visual effects.

i think it should win best director definitely obviously for the last one and a nod towards all three

The acadamey will never give Peter Jackson the award because there a bunch of elite **** and he dosen't kiss there asses enough, and they'll never let the award be attached to someone who directed a few films like Bad Taste & Meet The Feebles, they'll screw him like they did the last two years.

Pitty really when you see the films and what they loose out too.

Like Roman Polanksi? And even if Jackson himself doesn't kiss Hollywood ass, you can be damn sure that New Line will.

I think it should definitely win best director and best picture but only because he was absolutely robbed when he didn't win either for fellowship of the ring.

I can't think of a director who's worked as hard for his films as Jackson has. The man is a legend. I don't give a stuff whether the Academy reward him for that or not - he's got my undying respect for what he's done.

Best Director? Very likely, I'll imagine. The Academy is well known for rewarding people for a set of movie work rather than the particular movie they get nominated for.

Best Picture? I bet not. Nothing to do with deserved or not, they're unlikely to reward a fantasy movie. Nominated, yes. Win? No. Going by the Golden Globes, I bet we can see "Cold Mountain" picking up here - it's historical for one, it's about America for two, and it's meant to be fairly decent, for three. Also expect to see The Last Samurai and Mystic River in this category, creating tough competition from a conservative elitist bunch of voters.

Acting categories? I doubt we'll see anything here. Possibly a nomination for Ian McKellen but he's likely to be beaten by some of the nominations from actor heavy movies like "Mystic River".

Best Adapted Screenplay? Possible win here, although I'm not sure who he'd be up against.

It can win in a slew of other areas of course: best soundtrack, best sound editing, best SFX (It HAS to win this), best costume design (up against the historicals like "Cold Mountain" here and - maybe - "Party Monster), best original song, best art design, best cinematography, etc.

Jackson BETTER win (I've a feeling he might) but beyond that, haven't a clue who is likely this year.

i have to agree with everything you've just said and if he doesn't win it will be a scandal

*Sadly this is very true. Also since 9/11 American movies tend to be unfairly favoured in winning an oscar.*

*Not to sure about this. It may be just a fantasy movie but its one of the best trilogys ever made and each film is so very well made it should get an oscar for best director. I havent seen cold mountain yet but to be better than RoTK will take some doing.*

Acting categories? I doubt we'll see anything here. Possibly a nomination for Ian McKellen but he's likely to be beaten by some of the nominations from actor heavy movies like "Mystic River".

*Honestly can see any of the actors winning best actor/supporting actor.*

Best Adapted Screenplay? Possible win here, although I'm not sure who he'd be up against.

*It would be a crime if it dosent win this award.*

*Nothing in the last 3 years, never mind last year can touch any of the LoTRs movies effects wise.*

Jackson BETTER win (I've a feeling he might) but beyond that, haven't a clue who is likely this year.

    *He really does deserve it.*

To be honest, does anyone really give a toss about oscars these days? An oscar just helps with DVD/Video rentals and sales, and the same applies to nominations. None of the LoTRs films need any extra hipe to sell.
