Racing Channel to feature Irish meetings

    by Michael Clower

THE launch of a new-look daily Racing Channel, scheduled for February, will be delayed, but the station will include Irish racing when it eventually gets off the ground.

Former Coral Eurobet managing director Trevor Beaumont and David Craven, ex-chiefexecutive of 24 Dogs, are heading the project which will retain the Racing Channel name.

Craven said on Tuesday: "February was the intention but we are still going through some strategic options and we are probably going to delay the launch until we have more clarity on our position.

"There is the rest of the rights relationships to be considered and early next month everyone will be taking stock on where the 49 tracks stand because of the expected Office of Fair Trading ruling."

The OFT is looking into the contract between Attheraces and the Racecourse Association and is expected to announce its findings shortly.

The Craven-Beaumont project will show racing from the ten GG-Media tracks but it would obviously be keen to show racing from othercourses if the OFT rules against the Attheraces contract.

Craven added: "We have a deal (with Horse Racing Ireland) to show all Irish racing providing it is on a subscription-based channel.

"We will be part of the Sky service and the cost will be around £10 a month for the wholesale deal we are selling to bookmakers. For the ordinary consumer it will be around £14.95 a month."

The old Racing Channel went off the air at the end of January and Irish racing was withdrawn a month earlier because the racecourses complained that they were not getting any return.

I just hope this isin't one of those channels that put it's launch date back and back and then dosen't launch at all.

Hmm, do they expect many people to subscribe to the Racing Channel at £15 (probably €20) per month?

I can't imagine this working as it didnt work before, as they went FTA. Will attheraces become a subscription channel too? If not, it's probably a waste of time! :(
