Forgive me for being stupid, but how exactly does a network game work?

Basically, how do you go about starting one? And presumably, say you have 5 other people playing, do you have to arrange a certain time to all meet up to play it? Is that how it works?

Yes youve got to arrange times with other people . Ive never connected via the Internet , only through my Home Network but i reckon the setup is the same.
One PC , Pick the fastest machine or one with the most Ram to act as a server and load the game on to it. In 03/04 there 's an option to check 'Run As Server'
Then all connecting PCs can join into this game by clicking Join Network Game Button. It should pick up the IP Address of the running server and join that game

    Well, that's annoying! Cheers though!
