this is an argument me & my g/f often have, I like marvel/dc and Warhammer Monthly she likes Anime & some french comics (she hasn't told me which 1 yet).

    Opinions????

I dislike anime because often the characters look wierd with large eyes and unusually slim bodies.

(curiously despite having a serious dislke to anime, i actually liked ghost in the shell and am considering gett crying freeman (the anime version))

Well the content is always the most important thing, but given a choice between western and anime animation, I generally prefer western.

Also, the content of anime/manga sometimes suffers because too much attention is paid to "ooh manga, cool".

I really liked "Spirited Away" though, and am planning on watching "Ghost in the shell". By the way, all the reviews for "ghost in the shell" on http://www.amazon.co.uk mention horrible DVD quality, is the Region 1 DVD any better?

Man both are great in their own right, but if you want to see how good it can be when you blend the two, check out Marvel Manga titles!!! The artwork is great.

I bought the X-Men Ronin mini-series a few months ago and thought it was awful myself. Anime and western comics are absolute poles apart, and its very difficult to combine the two successfully. Sentinel, from the Marvel Tsunami line, was quite good though. Not sure if you'd consider it as manga however.

    I'm partial to either, myself.

I prefer Western art as the style is more varied and it's less cute.

I'd rarely buy animé stuff - only maybe if it was a good sci-fi story. I'm amazed at the number of manga-style comics I've seen about really dull stuff like school and relationships as well - who buys that stuff?

yeah a friend of mine from hong kong said that the most popular amine films there are about a bunch of kids on a soccer team, or was it a basketball team.

Manga isnt marginalised in Japan the way comics are here, consequently it deals with every aspect of life and is read by a much wider spectrum of the public.
Hence to western comic fans a lot of it seems pretty mundane. Its sort of the equivalent of soap operas over here.

I think its more interesting the way Manga deals with more than just the same old superhero characters recycled year after year. I find that western comics are mostly very repetitive and boring.

Yeah, superheroes get dull after a while. It's dumb how many people think all comics should be about superheroes - it would be like saying all novels should be detective stories or something. This is why I like comics that break out of the superhero mould and deal with all sorts of themes.

It's cool that Manga does this - personally though, i find stories about love and relationships boring unless they have original ideas in them (they rarely do).

One of my favourite Manga's is Ranma 1/2 which is technically a love story, but is a very whacky funny love story. The main character Ranma turns into a girl whenever he is splashed with cold water, tis great slapstick comedy and very original imo.

That sounds cool! What I hate is "I've got a crush on X - what can I do to make them like me?"-type stuff.

Yeah, Ranma 1/2 is a great manga. Like the anime too, but I think the manga is better. The father of Ranma (the main character), when splashed with cold water, turns into a panda. Of course, when splashed with hot water, they both return to their original state. Its a very funny story.

I like both styles, they each have strong points. But since I can't really find anything appealing to me in comic books since Jeff Smith finished Bone (the one comic book which I have stuck with since I started reading it six years ago), I'll stick with manga, even though I love the diversity in western art. The quirky Japanese always seem to win me over.

I tend to agree with Iceman on this one. Both have there own strenghts, comparing western and anime is pretty much the same as comparing dc and marvel, both have there strengths and weaknesses, both have fans and haters, and both hold there own in the respective ends of the market

Ive only been into anime for a year or two and before that hadnt reead many comics for years.

Anyway I seem to notice that the old western comics have, over time, become more alike anime in design.

    Maybe its just me ;)

Thats actually kinda true, esp some of the new marvel releases, there does tend to be some resemblence to anime art work, not that thats a bad thing mind you, some of the work thats coming out may be gettin close to each other but alot of it is still pretty sweet
