Following on from Kold's thread about Hottest Names at:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=128506&perpage=20&pagenumber=1

I want to check something out with u guys. Any of you think that some names should be kept for older people or at least until you're 18 - names like Patrick + Thomas spring to mind first. Perhaps it's just me cos my Dad's name's Thomas or Tom but I can't imagine calling one of your mates in primary school Tom or Thomas, or Pat or something. Can't think of any more like that at the minute but can any of you think of names that just don't sound right for kids?? It's probably just me being silly.

I know that you will shape the name around the person when you meet them and it's all about an individual's perception of a name but I also think that a name you're given can shape you to some degree. What do you think?

Forgive the boring topic and the rambling but I am bored out of my mind - doing a Fás course in Dundalk and we do nothing. There's only so much surfing you can do.

What about some of the British-type names u hear like Mildred and Agatha? The reason I might not get these names is because I went to school in a rough enough area with kids called Mono and Johno and Scumbaggo, although I knew an Edmund when I was younger.

Yeah....robert. Not really a good name till you're older. Try all other ways of saying it. Rob. Robert. Robby. Bob. Bobby. Robbo. I dunno maybe there's more. I don't see any of those as a kids name tbh except maybe bobby, but that's a bit of a stretch at that.

Gerard. Any baby called Gerard freaks me out. I cant see any child under the age of 14 being called Gerard.

Strange you should mention that. One of my mates all through school was and even now is called Gerard [he didn't change his name] - but with some names the Nickname saves you. He has always been Ged, except when we were in preschool or playschool or whatever when we called him Gerard. It's a bit of a weird name isn't it? Like I said before though we all see this differently, which is a wee bit interesting.

Personally I dislike My first name but gladly not many people call me buy it.Darren it is but I prefer to go by my second name Rooney.

So call me rooney and ill be happy or else d :)

I do think that some names sound older than others but its only coming froma point of view of not being associated with a name like that all your life.I have a mate called robert who I have known since I was 3 just call him rob or robert and it seems fine to me nothing odd about it.

Mines Alexandre (The orginal spelling), and I've grown up into a stragist bent on world domination, all I need now is to do too many drugs, get into beastiality and peodophilia (Alexandre the Great was reknowned for his over indulgence with all mortal pleasures)

on the other hand, what about names that are great for kids, but have no business being anywhere near anyone older, say for example a little old lady called lucy, or chloe. it just doesn't work. old people are supposed to be called frank and george, not josh and ben!!
although, lately, i've noticed an increase in "old lady" names being given to babies, like molly and betty

Old lady named Kandi or Stacey

i know a little kid called Frank. i think the fact that its such a typical older person's name is deadly. the kid just happens to be a quiet, serious guy and the name is brillliant for him. some names just shouldn't be given to kids but a few are very good even if they seem a little mature.

That's true and I don't know if I mentioned this already, but do any of you think that people seem to shape themselves around their idea of a name when it is given to them? Or is there something in our subconscious about name association with character traits or something?

Walter, William, Norman, Cormac and Richard suit older men only.
And for older ladies: Betty (Elizabeth), Meadbh, Mavis and Mary (Maura, Maureen).

I do think I took alot of stuff from my name, the uniqueness of its spelling always made me a little different (Which I am), its a good name for me.
It means protecter/defended of men, also means warrior. I may not be highly skilled at martial arts but am the sort of person who has the instinctive urge to protect others.

People will also connect their own meaning to my name and us the different abrivations. No-one, bar my little sister can call me Al, I'm Alex to most, Zander/Xandre to those who see my light silly side more often and Alexandre to a close few.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 352 ✭✭davil

The thing about meaning also, do you think that we may change a little bit if we hear what our name means. Apparently [according to me keyring] I am a warrior, brave and strong, will accept any challenge, defend my beliefs and back down to noone. That sounds cool and all but is it really me? Not really
