CD burner won't work

The CD burner in my PowerBook isn't working. It's a CD burner and DVD burner; I haven't even tried to burn DVDs.

It *plays* both CDs and DVDs.

(This is a G4 PowerBook running Panther.)

In Toast, the Record button is greyed out. In iTunes it usually says "No CD burner found" (maybe not in that exact phrase).

In Finder it burned a CD once, then the whole computer crashed and burned - the CD was a coaster; its image disappeared from the desktop, the only way I could eject it was finally by restarting with the mouse held down, the keyboard stopped working properly for a while, and the computer was *very* slow to start up for a couple of hours after that. Seems to have sorted it out now, but I'm afraid to try burning anything.

I took a look in the System Profiler, but no CD or DVD drive is listed.

Has anyone any idea what's happening and how to sort it out, please?

you should have got a hardware diagnostic CD with the powerbook, try booting up from that. This will do a complete diagnostic of the hardware on the unit and will tell you if the ocmputer sees the drive. If the drive is there then try re-installing the OS. Otherwise get on to apple ASAP and they should sort you out pretty quick. Something similar to that happened with my iBook and they picked it up the next day from me, had the machine back within 5 days with a new drive.

oops sorry, seeing as the drive will play discs - get onto apple and have them replace the drive, they will do it no problem

'Sokay, got it working. Just one of those new-computer glitches. Thanks for the help.

I didn't get a hardware diagnostic CD, though. Only the one grey Panther CD, unless it's part of that.

No it's a separate CD, I got two or three CD's with my powerbook.
