Spent the afternoon in the Henry St area, checking out PC components & games.

The 2 highlights of the day:

DVD+-RW in Maplins €149, in Dixons €299!! Maplins compares well with online retailers (for this product, rather than in general).

    Max Payne 2 videogame
    GAME - €29.99
    Virgin - €49.99
    HMV - €54.99
    gameplay.com £26.99stg.
    blackstar.co.uk £32.99stg.

So sometimes the high street can be competitive. But (as with HMV) sometimes they take the piss. But HMV was still full of shoppers

HMV makes most of it's money off cds and dvds.
There is no real competition out there for them regarding cds and dvds so the place is always packed.

I've fo9und that in general Golden Discs and Tower tend to kick HMV about price wise, but people take the easy/ignorent option most of the time. Their perogitive.

The latest example I have is last week.

A mate of mine wanted the 50 cent album, so we were close to hmv so we went in, headed downstairs, he picked it up, quickly followed by both me and another friend telling him not to buy it when we saw it was 22 euro or so. We took him down to golden discs (he didn't know where it was, he just moved to dublin) where he then bought it for 14euro. 8 euro or so for walking down grafton street, heh.

This is one of the examples of a rip off that can very easily be avoided. Good luck to HMV/Tower, etc. They must think we're stupid - and indeed we are if we're prepared to pay these silly prices when we have the choice to go online and buy music for a fraction of the price.

The price of something is determined by what one is prepared to pay for it and what the seller is prepared to sell it at ....Mary Harney was right - we dont shop around in many cases - so why do we deserve any better.

In short, there is no monopoly here - so go buy your music online.

Was in town on Sunday. Had a sudden inspiration to get the new Encyclopedia of Ireland for a pressie for someone and popped into Chapters on Abbey St where i was put off by the €65 price. Gave Reeds on Nassau St a call while i was in the shop and found out they where charging €45.50. Asked the manager of Chapters if they would price match it and as i didnt fancy the walk and sure enough he did :)

for cheap CD's/DVD's check my sigout.

as for books, the best southside bookshop i've found is just off nassau st. (same road as Game is on) the bit with the island in the middle of the road where there's lights (forgot the name, but it's on the tipof my tongue). it's 'something' & 'something' (forgot that name too) and it's got about 5 floors of books at pretty decent prices. also has the best delection of computer books i've found anywhere in dublin.

Hughes And Hughes is the one your thinking of. And the Street is Dawson St. :)

Chapters on Abbey St are very good also, especially their second hand section.

Hughes & Hughes on Dawson St? Don't think so (but I could be wrong). They're in the Stephens Green Centre alright. They also have a shop in the airport which I believe is a ripoff.

Theres Hodges Figgis (which is probably the one you mean), Waterstones and Fred Hannas (now Easons)
I think there's a branch of Murder Ink there too.

But why buy computer books? You can usually find all the info you need on the internet. Its full of swats who are just dying to show off all their knowledge.

I'm in the mood for slagging swats this evening :D
