For a good free e-mail client get Mozilla Thunderbird, it's quiet stable and easy to use for a .4 release.

Does Jbmail do news too? It can be handy for filtering unwanted mails.

You could try Sylpheed-Claws either. It's another open source email client and newsreader. I haven't really tried it out but it looks good.

    God I love open source.
