I've a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook E-Series with a little prob :( On cold booting and after correctly entering the BIOS password, nothing visible happens... grrrr. The hard drive spins up, the keys are unresponsive, but nothing else happens. I've tried hooking the laptop to an external monitor but nothing shows :(. I was thinking (in a PC mindset) clear the CMOS - but how to on a laptop? Anyone? If anyone has any ideas shout up - I want to give this laptop as a pressie and will suck major if I can't

I had something similar with a dell laptop a while ago, on cold boot, it would go through the password screen, then come up with OS not found, basically meaning the hard drive hadn't spun up properly.

Sounds similar, which would mean the hard drive could be on the way out (does it boot up at all ? u just said cold boot). If so, not much can be done other than to get a new hd. Resetting the cmos won't do much more than putting all the options in the bios to default values.

In my case I am not even seeing anything on the screen, tho I'm quite positive that the hdd is ok

Yea if its not posting you should reset the bios. If you have the manual it should show u, if not then unscrew the back of the laptop this may be different in some cases locate the jumper beside a battery should have three pins change the jumper so that the other pin is covered e.g.

    * *+*

    *+* *

Start the laptop nothing will post, turn off the laptop change the jumper back, start the PC and it should post go into the bios setup & config the settings.

    It will boot

    This should work.

    Thanks joe............

Before I clear the NVRAM... on a laptop is it ok to do this. I've read that doing this esp. on thinkpads can cause more problems than good.

Oh and another thing I noticed, on booting the CPU fans spins up and then spins down very quickly

    It's a FujitsuSiemens E-Series 6540 - so I'm guessing no older than 3 years old

Can you access the bios setup?
    What os are you using?
Xp has a decent rescue kit on its cd it should be able to sort out most non hw problems

If your pc is trying to load an os you could try using a live rescue cd (the disc with your operating system installed) if you dont have it you could try a live linux cd, a lot of live rescue discs out there im currently using mandriva but knoppix has a large collection of support tools,

if the live/rescue cd loads you may have a problem with the hd
You should be able to access the hd from a live cd see your files nd stuff so you could you use it + plus external drive to salvage any data.

If the live/rescue cd doesn't load it may be that the bios is not set to boot from removable media or cds check the bios setup, if you cant access the bios setup then i would reset the cmos, open up the pc take the coin battery out and leave it for a few hours or jump it
