    Tony Williams lifetime- emergency (1969)

best of John Coltrane- features elvin jones- great jazz drummer

    Dave Weckl- master plan

Steve Gadd- pretty amazing drummer, esp. with steely dan(check 'aja') good stuff on 'best of steve gadd'

Buddy rich or Gene Krupa albums- haven't listened to much of either-the drum battle between both is highly overrated

Albums with rush, elp, yes have good drumming-but are boring to **** to listen to.

There are a couple of CD's entitled 'Burning for Buddy', which are tributes to Mr. Rich. There is a different drummer on every track playing with the B.R. Big Band, all playing songs Buddy used to play, and ranging from the truely Jazz drummers ...Louis Bellson, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd etc. to rock and Pop ....Manu Katché, Neil Peart, Matt Sorum.

An even better treat is to watch the various videos which were the original inspiration for the CD recorded around 1989. Steve Gadd (I think he played Cotton tail) and Vinnie Colaiuta are truely magnificent. You should be able to pick them up in one or another music shop.

    Well ,
there are some great drummers, who play all styles, Gadd, Palmer, Portney etc, Neil Peart of Rush is an all round master, and they have some elements of jazz in some of their stuff. One really talented JAzz drummer Ive seen is a guy called Mark Mondesir,..... he's a black guy from England, top class and smooth as silk in his style. He has a DVD out called: The Mystery Unfolds, and Im sure he's been on several albums by other artists, maybe you can follow it up, but the DVD would be well worth buying, I must get it myself!.....

    ciao' amigo..Baggio.....

Stratus is the track that everyone mentions for Cobham but it must be said its as much rock as it is jazz. The title track Spectrum is a nice groove...

    Hey Sauron,

Dave Weckl has played with Chick Corea for years. I can't recommend any records with him though.
What I can recommend is 'Dave Grusin Presents GRP All-Star Big Band: Live'. Fantastic high energy live performance. Crystal clear modern recording from '93. Apparently the end of the tour so everyone's on form and hitting the high notes.
see the following link for a track listing .....great tunes.

In a similar vein check out the previous release from '82 of a similar concept entitled 'DAVE GRUSIN AND THE NY-LA DREAM BAND', also live and also full of energy with Steve Gadd on Drums. Track listing and credits

    Happy listening

It will be interesting to hear Jimmy Chamberlin go back to his jazz roots...
