Looking at getting a few industry certs under my belt....is there anywhere that you can just sit the exams, and not have to pay the ridiculous fees for 2-3 week courses?

    Exams like A+, Cisco, etc.

    :)

When I get a bit more Java under my belt I was considering taking the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam (SJCP), is it worthwhile to have and will it be of much use to get a job in industry? I was also considering taking one of the Cisco exams but I know absolutely nothing about them, can anyone fill me in?

Raskolnikov - IMHO you need commercial experience in Java to get a Java SW job. If you want to become competent with Java I would recommend taking the SJCP though , its very focussed on the actual language and is, I think far better than MS 's offerings , as theres too much marketing speak and emphasis on the IDE etc with MS SW certs. But as too getting work purely on the basis of it - not a chance I'm afraid. But having said that it certainly wouldn't go against you , if you know Java anyway its probably worth the 150 euro or whatever to get confirmation of your knowledge .

Most Fas Training Centres do exams for these Tech Certs. Also get yourself some braindumps and study them.

    Braindumps....

It took me 2 yrs of working, doing courses and self study to get Msce certified. Hard f*cking work. If you use braindumps, your taking the easy route, cheating and will be clueless when a real life situation comes and kicks you in the a$s. I hate it when I come across an 'engineer' that has the same qualifications as me, but still doesn't have a breeze what he's/she's doing.... it demotes the value of the cert.. IE, salary goes down

The CCNA isn't too difficult, the thing is theres a lot of general information you need to know. Its one exam.

The CCNP is four exams but it can be easier in a way as each exam specialises in one area so it can be easier to study.

You need the CCNA to do the CCNP I believe.

    1) Whats wrong with taking the easy route to get something ? Why should you make things harder than they are for yourself ?

    2) Braindumps are far from cheating. They are the same as past papers that you can access for college exams. Theres nothing wrong with knowing exam formats and past questions before an exam.

    3) If you only study the braindumps and were already clueless then yes you are still going to be clueless in a "real life situation" , but if you already had the knowledge I don't think its worth the money to pay for a course where you learn nothing or in some cases know more than the instructor.

I payed quite a bit of money for a CCNA course while another guy in work just got the book and studied it and I realised thats all I needed to do. The book allows you to study at your own pace.

In a course the class goes at the pace of the whole group. Yu could be completely bored off your tits in some areas and find it very smiple yet some other guy in the class can't figure it out and so the class stays on this subject until the guy understands or says he understands.

To me it seemed better to mess with the Cisco gear at work, ask a Network Admin some questions and study the book besides paying €1500 to an instructor who for a lot fo the time just read from the book.
