Quality System

I'm looking for a good quality home cinema system and would like some help. I've got a great television - so that's that out of the way at least. Now what would i need to make an excellent set-up for a large room?
I'm not too keen on an all in one package, but I won't rule it out completely (looking for maybe a dvd recorder).

With a budget of around a 1000 euro, can somebody please help?

To be honest, with a budget of €1000 minus a DVD recorder, you are going to struggle to find something to fill a large room. Your options are:

    1) Raid the buy and sell and pick up a few bargains. A friend of mine done this a while ago and got a good 5.1 system with floorstanding speakers and sub, all by reputable brands for just over €600. Just be careful about the speakers, make sure you hear that they are not blown (listen to them for a period at a good volume)

    2) Start off with a good stereo system, consisting of a pair of floorstanders and a beefy amp >100w. If you spend the money filling the room with good stereo sound, it will be a doddle to upgrade to surrond with the likes of a Yamaha DSP-E800.

    3) The dreaded all-in-one. No matter how big the speakers look, these systems usually struggle to fill any space, let alone large rooms. If you go for one make sure it has an active sub, i.e. the amp is in the sub not the DVD player. Some models have all the amps in the sub, but ideally you are looking for a model with the 5 speaker outputs from the main unit, and a seperate amp located in the sub. Normally (but not always) this setup is a sign of a better quality all-in-one system.

    Good luck!

Thanks for your help Robbie. I think i'll have to drop the dvd recorder off the wish list (hopefully prices will drop after Christmas) and go for a plain multi-region.

Although, starting off with a good stereo system seems a viable option, then perhaps get that Yamaha processor... Decisions!
What happened to the good old days when a tv was all you needed!:)
    Thanks again

The yamaha DSP-E800 seems like a solid unit and would be the way to go:

Just a word on yamaha gear - there is very little internal processing in yamaha Stereo amps hence 'Natural Sound' so it would be best paired with a yamaha stereo amp.
