Sky Digital or Chorus (advice needed)

    Okay,

Rare as it may seem I've never had satellite or cable before, but am now getting grief, so I'll be going one way or the other.

I'm not after the movies or sports, but just the general channels and Disney(if possible).

From what I've seen so far Satellite looks to be the way to go, especially as I'll also be moving next year to an area where satellite will be the only option. What I've found difficult to find so far is a guide to equipment and monthly prices and also an idea of time to installation. I'm also trying to get my head around FTA and where I'll stand on taking the equipment with me when I move.

I've tried ringing one or two of the installers, but marketing speak makes me turn violent and brings me out in a nasty rash, so thought I'd ask here and find out the truth.

    cheers,

    Pat

I'll be devil's advocate for just one minute.

You should be able to have a choice of Sky or Chorus almost anywhere in the country, so you can pick either.

    <End of devils advocate>

You would be mad to get Chorus. Sky is by far and away the better option. You get way more channels and the quality is perfect.

It sounds like you will be wanting the family pack. This is €28 (approx) per month and gives you all of the channels except sports, movies and disney. You can add on the disney channels for abot €8 per month.

When signing up you should opt for the full sky world package which will get you cheap installation (currently €15). After one month you can downgrade to the family with just a call to Sky. It takes approx 10 days from signing up to installation.

Moving should be no trouble, if you are building yourself, make sure that you put a phone socket near the TV point as it is required by Sky for the first year.

The contract is for minimum of one year. After that you can cancel the subscription and you will still get loads of Free To Air channels (see FAQ at top of the page). The equipment is yours from day one.

    anything else? :D

    Shane,

I presume the full sky world package is more expensive for the time I have it.

Are there any recommended installers (Midlands) or are they all much the same.

Thank's very much for the help

Yes, Sky World is €60 per month. But if you had it for just one month (handy during the Xmas period) and get install for €15, that would be a total of €75. If I recall correctly, I think you also get 2 Monsters Inc teddies if you subscibe to Disney when signing up (note that Disney channels are free with Sky World and Sky Movie World)

If you opted for Family Pack in your first month, that's €27.99 pm, and install fee is €100 which equals €126.99 (for first month)! Disney is I think €6.35 per month on its own.

Note that not all retailers are participating in the €15 install deal. You may need to look around. Also note that usually, Sky don't debit your account for subscription until near the end of first month, and then they will take 2 months payment at once - the previous month and the forthcoming month - as you always pay one month in advance.

Any more questions just ask! ;)

Happy enough to go with the Sky World package for the first few months. Now all I have to do is find an installer who can do it before Christmas.

    ta for all the advice

stay local, don't ring Sky because you could end up waiting for ages

I wouldn't agree with you on that. I enquired with Dixons and was told I'd be waiting at least 4 weeks so I decided to ring Sky. I rang Sky on Monday morning and had everything completed by the Thursday afternoon.
Less than 4 days with Sky directly as opposed to over 4 weeks locally.

Sorry Mossy I don't agree with you either. You must have had a bad experience. I rang Sky direct in Scotland and had Sky installed within a week.

Just so you know, the sky dish HAS to point South-Easterly. If the aesthetics of the front of your house are of importance to you, you might want to think about which direction your house faces in case a big grey saucer will be stuck to it.

They don't provide this info till they come to install the stuff.

Installed within a week? I assume you're still waiting on your viewing card then? The cards usually take 5-10 days
