Eircomnet Connection Issues

I'm running windowsxp, internet explorer6, on an eircomnet anytime connection,56k dial up modem, achieving average connection speed of 47kbps, with norton internet security.

Manage to connect no problem but more often than not after a period of time (can be 10 mins or an hour) my browser freezes and wont let me into any pages, it just dies, however the connection timer is still running.

I have the du meter software and it shows up this failure, the graph goes blank

Ihave tried everything including the new connection wizard, checking norton settings etc but to no avail.

Is this an eircom failure, or my fault, the connection worked fine until last weekend. because of the inconsistency of the problem im thinking it might be an eircom issue?

i've also had problems with eircomnet but with the flat rate 25 package. sometimes it connects first time at an average speed of around 44kbps but just recently it takes 5 or 6 dial-ups to connect with a speed of only between 37 & 40kbps.

has anyone got any suggestions as to why this is happening or if there is an alternative (more reliable) dial-up number

mickeyboymel, you should try using another free service such as oceanfree to see if you notice the same issue with them.

Otherwise, this sounds like a possible corruption on the computer. Possibly with winsock or the network components. Which operating system do you run? Also have you installed any new system utils lately or made any adjustments to current system utils, firewalls or antivirus progs?
Finally if you have XP or ME try using system restore back to last week (no further than that) to see if it resolves the issue.

thanks rob, am using windowsxphome 5.1.2600 service pack 1,
first noticed it when i tried to download a clip using real player, its fine this evening been on for two hours now, have uninstalled the real one player, used system restore to roll back to last friday and then downloaded new real player, all firewalls and norton internet security have not been touched, however the computer asked me to reregister windows xp as a lot of new software had been added (its only three weeks old) then automatic update downloaded 15 new updates yesterday.
all seems to be well now .......but for how long......

most of the time you'll find that the phone line itself is to blame for a poor connection. unfortunately some of the phone lines around ireland are 20 or more years old, and are not fit for the job they have these days.

i even heard of someone in the sticks who's connection was terrible for ages and had tried everything to no avail, until it turned out that the farm a mile down the road was using an electric fence, and it had been causing the problem by current leaking into the ground and disrupting the phoneline which ran near it. the farmer was making some repairs to the fence, so had turned it off, and they found out from that. as soon as he turned it back on the line went crap again.

most support lines get a significant increase in support calls as soon as there's a decent bit of rain too, due to cracks in the insulation which the water can get in and cause shorts.

no sign of any real improvement on the horizon either, not until the government gives comreg a decent set of balls anyway.

anyway, try oceanfree or iol and see how they go. you can sign up via the websites for both from your eircom connection, so no need to go hunting for cd's or anything. failing that their support people can talk you through it anyway.

also make sure you're modem drivers etc. are up to date.

the other thing to do is borrow a laptop off someone and try that for a few days and see if there's a difference.

might want to try and swap your pc and have whoever you borrow the lappy off test your pc at their place (make sure you delete all your porn first tho;)) and see how that goes.

T hanks for all the replies, seems to have stabilised today, still getting occasional errors in "connection status" under details I think it was my system and not eircom---for once!!
