Ok, have an old dell [thank you Jimeatsmenu] sitting beside me [1998 vintage]. I was going to mod it to fix my other motherboard [ATX socket A] but its not going to fit in too well and also as the case is a dell its gonna be a lot of work getting all to fix in. So i have decided to try and make my own case.

So my plan is as follows. Make a cube case about 1ft [in all directions ;) ] of [possibly] metal and a bit of plexyglass for a window on the top and possibly some sides. And also its gonna be lit up blue :)

What I need to know is any links to places that will help me actually build it. I have been googleing all night and have several windows open with many tabs in each of those open. I am planning to possibly have the botherboard at a slight 30degree angle inside with HDD below the botherboard and PSU attached to the top of the case somwhere. Pictures of my plans will be done during the week.

And another question. Where in Dublin will I be able to find the materals needed for these. Will probly need some thin metal for the sides and also brackets and the like to keep it all together.

    Ideas and opions please :)

You can get plexi and possibly metal sheets in B&Q.

Id suggest salvaging the mobo tray and PCI\AGP card slots from the old case to save you having to cut out and measure the fine details.

    Why not use wood?
I made a cube with a basic wooden frame. I used 2cm x 1cm square beading and the cube was mobo-width 22cm square. It's just a box frame with some extra wooden struts to support PSU, floppy & CD drive. It's covered with thin blue plastic sheets (1mm) with some blue LEDs inside and a blue lit power switch.
I intended to make it a Borg cube (I still intend to make one) but I couldn't find any green plastic sheets. (I still have the green power switch and LEDs and stuff)

I'll post some pics when I get it back.

My plan as it stands at the moment is to actually make the frame with wood and reinforce it with metal. Im planning to have two sectiosn to it. The buttom will be like a cubbord and will have the PSU in it and also some storage space. Above that will be well, motherboard and all is on that aswell as the Hard Drive. I am going to use two blue cathods to light up the inside aswell as some LED fans. All will be flue :)

See attached gif [made with generous MS Paint] to get a better understanding of what I mean. I am going to call it the bluecube.

Yes. was planning to have all the mobo ports hidden behind a long door or flap so as when nothing is plugged in they are not sticking out the side. Was not planning to start cutting out any slots or anything but just do. Will need another case to do this as the old dell case i gots from Jimeatsmenu only had about three slots in it [very old case] so will need to get out the saw for that :)

Good luck with this Winters. Be sure to take pictures as you go along.

I have had plans for this sort of thing in the past, but I lack the tools and the money to buy them.

I wonder if we could get access to the Engineering labs in DCU... hm :)

    oh, and winters: 011100000110011001100110010001100101010000100001

Well, i am sorry to say that the plans have been put on hold for a while. The fact that i am going to get a new graphics card has put a dent in the funds... :( . Still I do have my drawings and plans and will proably get it done over the summer. Spent days of lectures doing my plans. Also, i estimated it was going to cose me about €300 [including new hard drive] and i dont have that under my bed waiting to be spent..........

Yeah, thats always the way. I have a half built VCR case thingy sitting in my room. Did all the hard work, cut metal for it and all, but haven't done any more on it. Maybe over christmas when I'm bored to bits.

You can make a case out of anything. Some of the more creative examples I've seen would be at these sites.
