New Road Eliminates West Cork Traffic Bottleneck
    1st December 2003

The National Roads Authority (NRA) has described today's opening (Monday 1st December 2003) of the N71 Skibbereen Relief Road as an important development in maintaining West Cork's booming tourist trade and enhancing its commercial potential.

Mr. Peter Malone, Chairman of the NRA, said,"The Authority is committed to protecting the condition of the national secondary road network and to a targeted programme of new construction works focused on particular pressure points. The opening of the relief road around Skibbereen, which will remove 9,000 vehicles per day from the town centre, is a practical demonstration of this approach. Skibbereen is an important tourism centre and gateway to West Cork and Kerry. Tourists and residents alike will appreciate the benefits of the relief road - a more pedestrian friendly environment within the town and better and safer driving conditions for both local and long-distance road users."

Chief Executive of the NRA, Mr. Michael Tobin, said, "An important advantage of the new €7.7m road is the reduction in journey times - cut by up to 20 minutes at peak times. The chronic traffic congestion, which was a daily battle for motorist and pedestrian alike, will be a thing of the past. Not only will this benefit the region's thriving tourist trade but add a competitive edge to the market town of Skibbereen."

This scheme, which is 1.1 km in length and includes a 70 m three span bridge over the Ilen River, starts on the western side of Skibbereen at Marsh and joins the existing Cork road just past Gortnaclohy.

The Irish Government under the National Development Plan 2000 - 2006 funded this project, and it was also part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

    Note:

The N71 National Secondary route runs from Killarney, Co Kerry to Cork City. It passes through towns and villages such as Kenmare, Glengarrif, Bantry, Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Leap, Clonakilty, Bandon, Innishannon and onto Cork.
